No injuries in runaway vehicle

No one was injured when a parked vehicle began to roll with a passenger jumping for safety.

Pocono Mountain Regional police said the incident occurred at 12:15 p.m. Aug. 11 along Route 611 in Mount Pocono.Police said Joan Bowie, 63, of Long Pond, parked her 2005 Dodge van along Route 611 and left it running with Karen Smith, 48, of Taylor, Lackawanna County, in the front passenger seat. Bowie told Smith that she could turn the engine off if the air conditioner got too cold.Smith turned the vehicle off and it suddenly began to roll backward across both lanes of travel, jumped a curb and crashed into a porch at 1398 Pocono Blvd. As soon as the van started to roll, Smith jumped out and received scrapes from the roadway.Police said miraculously the out-of-control van did not strike any other moving vehicles and no one was hurt. Smith was examined at the scene by Pocono Mountain Regional ambulance personnel and released.
