Tamaqua driver facing DUI charge

Coaldale Police have filed charges against a Tamaqua area man after receiving blood test results from an Oct. 26 incident.

An officer was monitoring traffic on Route 209 at 2 a.m. when a silver Hyundai Elantra passed him at a high rate of speed, traveling west. The officer pulled out to follow the Hyundai and clocked the car doing nearly 100 miles per hour.As the car entered Tamaqua, it crossed over into the other traffic lane. The officer was able to get the driver's attention and have him stop in the area of the entrance to the shopping mall.The driver was identified as Devin Ryan Smith, 21, 161 Skyline Drive. Smith spoke with slurred speech, had bloodshot eyes and smelled of alcohol. He was given, and failed, field sobriety tests, then transported to St. Luke's Miners Hospital, Coaldale, for blood tests.The car was towed from the scene.Blood test results confirm a blood-alcohol content level of 0.176 percent, more than twice the legal limit of 0.08 percent.
