Tamaqua man facing charges

A Tamaqua man faces charges after an incident in the borough on March 3.

At 12:33 a.m. that day officers were dispatched to 319 Columbia St. where a man said he had been threatened by Joseph Nortavage, 45, of 319 N. Columbia St. The man noted that Nortavage had been drinking, became angry and pulled out a knife. He then dropped the knife, left the house and drove off in a blue Oldsmobile van.The officer went looking for the van, which he found pulling out of the parking lot at Fegley's Mini Market on Center Street.The van headed south at a high rate of speed and the officer followed, then made a traffic stop in the South Tamaqua area.Nortavage told the officer he was on his way to work. He admitted to having a few alcoholic drinks, then leaving the house after an argument with his wife. He appeared to be drunk and was given, and failed, field sobriety tests. He was transported to Schuylkill Medical-S. Jackson St., in Pottsville for blood tests.Pending lab results, he will be charged with driving under the influence of alcohol, driving with a suspended license and driving with an expired registration.
