Squatters arrested in Coaldale

Coaldale Police arrested two people they found squatting in a vacant building on Friday.

Officers received a tip at 8:34 p.m. Friday after someone saw two people enter a boarded-up house at the corner of Fifth and West Phillips streets. The first person entered through a boarded-up basement door, then opened the back door of the home for the other person to enter, according to the caller.Police entered the home and found Matthew Shaun Hiatt, 21, of Payson, Utah, and Elise Duran, 20, of Montreal, Canada, in a second-floor bedroom. Hiatt told officers he knew he "wasn't supposed to be in the house," but that someone he knew said it would be all right to stay there. Hiatt admitted a needle found on the bedroom floor was his property, as were needles found in his pants pockets. A pill bottle in his bag, he said, was prescribed to his mother, but she sent them to him. He admitted to using heroin.Duran's bag contained a prescription drug bottle with the name Edward Debevac on it. Duran said the pills inside were his, he was just using the "wrong pill bottle."Both men were charged with two counts of criminal trespass, possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a controlled substance in a container with a false/misleading label.
