Pocono Mountain police make several DUI arrests

Pocono Mountain Regional Police reported on driving under the influence arrests made by officers recently and a vehicle stop that led to drug charges.

• A Wilkes-Barre man is facing drunken driving charges after a two-vehicle crash that occurred at 9:57 a.m. March 10 along Kuhenbeaker Road at Hypsie Gap Road in Tunkhannock Township. Police responded to a crash and spoke to one of the drivers, identified as Faith Sovyrda, 32. She told officers she had just left a methadone clinic and while driving she "blacked out." Her vehicle crossed into the oncoming lane and struck another vehicle head-on. She was taken to the Pocono Medical Center, East Stroudsburg for injuries she sustained.Police said she has been charged with DUI of a controlled substance. The police report did not indicate if the other driver in the crash was injured.• On June 4 at 10:28 p.m. officers were flagged down while on Route 196 by a person reporting a possibly impaired driver. Police were told the vehicle was a Jeep with the left taillight out.Police found the vehicle and observed the vehicle weaving back and forth across the road. A vehicle stop was made and the driver identified as Ronny Kuilan, 52, of Tobyhanna. He failed field sobriety tests and was taken to the county DUI center for a blood test. A charge of DUI and summary offense were filed.• On July 31 about midnight, officers observed a vehicle being operated along Route 115 at Route 940 in Tobyhanna Township with one headlight out. A vehicle stop was made and the driver identified as Rodney Baker II, 22, of Pocono Summit. He was found to be under the influence and failed field sobriety tests. He was transported to the DUI center for a blood test. As a result, he has been charged with DUI of a controlled substance and possession of drug paraphernalia.• On June 11 at 6:35 p.m. officers observed a vehicle being driven along Route 423 in Coolbaugh Township with excessive dark window tint. A traffic stop was made at Laurel Road and officers identified the driver as Simon Gortych, 36, of Tobyhanna. Officers also noted the strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. A consent search was made and a glass pipe with burned vegetable matter - suspected marijuana were found.Gortych admitted the items were his.As a result, police charged him with possession of a small amount of marijuana, possession of drug paraphernalia and the summary offense of window tint.
