Schuylkill man jailed for theft and related charges

A Schuylkill County man was jailed late last week on theft and related counts.

State police at Schuylkill Haven said Robert D. Schappell Jr., 42, of 440 Lake Front Drive, Deer Lake, has been charged with theft by deception, receiving stolen property, and deceptive or fraudulent business practices. He was arraigned on the charges on Thursday, Feb. 6, by District Judge James Ferrier, of Orwigsburg, and committed to the county prison, Pottsville, in lieu of $50,000 bail.According to troopers on Jan. 28 Lehigh Valley Auction contacted police and reported that on July 24, 2013, Schappell purchased a 2005 Hummer at their auction for $18,695.50. He paid by check and removed the Hummer from the auction. The check was deposited into the firm's account and later returned for insufficient funds. The Hummer was never titled to Schappell because he never legally paid for it and it still belonged to Lehigh Valley Auction. On Nov. 15, 2013, Schappell sold the Hummer to Larry Luckenbill, 69, of Schuylkill Haven, for $8,500 knowing he did not have legal title or ownership of the vehicle.Troopers said the investigation is ongoing and asks anyone with a simular incident involving Schappell to contact them.
