Panther Valley board okays personnel moves
The Panther Valley school Board on Thursday voted on a number of personnel and policy actions.
They approved the resignation, effective Oct. 17, of high school physical education teacher Jocelyn Miller; hired Georgine Wetzel as a cafeteria worker at $7.80 an hour, and added Bonnie George to the elementary substitute teacher list at $85 a day.The board also approved, after much discussion, elementary teacher Juliette Forbes to take a 3-credit course, "Career Development for Teachers and Students: Finding Yourself in the World of Work," at the Carbon-Lehigh Intermediate Unit #21.In addition, the board approved mark Lazar as an athletics event worker at $25 per event and Ryan Fritzinger as a volunteer football coach. The board also agreed to ask the four boroughs that make up the district - Lansford, Summit Hill, Coaldale and Nesquehoning, to allow a part-time patrolman each to work at home varsity football games at $22 an hour. The move is intended to replace the seven Vanak Detective Agency employees who now work the games.The board also approved Angela Solomon and Heather Shober as elementary school chaperones and Helene Lazar as a high school chaperone.In addition, the board expelled two middle school students for violations of the district's weapons policy. The expulsions are for 10 days.Additionally, the board voted to allow its members to add actions to the meeting agenda by a majority vote. Before, a unanimous vote was needed. The board also agreed, on a split vote and much contention, to use Robert's Rules of Order as a guideline rather than a requirement.The action stated that the board president can decide to deviate from the rules as he or she feels necessary. Board members Bill Hunsicker, Mickey Angst and Irene Genther opposed the change. David Hiles, Anthony DeMarco, Jeff Markovich and Anthony Pondish voted in favor of the change.
