Carbon County court – drug cases

A New Jersey man pleaded guilty in Carbon County court last Friday to a drug dealing charge and is facing a long state prison term when sentenced next year.

He was one of six defendants in pending drug-related cases to enter a guilty plea before Judge Joseph J. Matika.

Corey L. Romer

, 47, of Edison, pleaded to one count of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, crack cocaine.

He was arrested following a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in Kidder Township by state police at Fern Ridge on Aug. 23, 2017. Troopers found crack cocaine and marijuana in the vehicle.

Matika told Romer, because of his prior criminal record, he faces a minimum prison term of 42 months up to 20 years on the charge.

Matika agreed to defer the sentencing to January.

Jared John Bielen

, 19, of McAdoo, pleaded to two counts of possession with intent to deliver a controlled substance, marijuana.

He was arrested on Feb. 26 in the area of West Main Street by Weatherly police after he made a controlled drug sale to a confidential informant. It was Bielen’s first contact with the criminal justice system.

Matika placed him on probation for two years on each count, with the terms running concurrently. He was also ordered to get a drug and alcohol evaluation and follow any recommendation for treatment, supply a DNA sample and render a total of 100 hours of community service.

Other pleas

Christopher George Weaver

, 25, of Bethlehem, pleaded to one count of possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested on March 29, 2015, by Mahoning Township police along Route 443 at Country Club Road following a traffic stop. He was previously placed in the county’s Accelerated Rehabilitation Disposition probation program but was revoked for violating conditions.

Matika placed him on probation for six months and ordered he get a drug and alcohol evaluation and render 25 hours of community service. The term runs concurrent with a probation period he is serving in Northampton County.

Andres A. Parra Lugo

, 27, of Jamaica, New York, pleaded to one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and possession of a small amount of marijuana.

He was arrested following a traffic stop along Interstate 80 in East Side Borough by state police at Fern Ridge. Troopers found drugs in the vehicle. He was originally charged with driving under the influence and refused a test, but that charge was dropped in a plea agreement.

Lugo is currently an inmate in the Pike County prison.

He told Matika he is going to be deported back to his home country of Colombia after his sentencing.

Matika imposed a fine of $100 on each count.

William Stichter

, 28, of Reading, pleaded to one count each of possession of a controlled substance - methamphetamine and possession of drug paraphernalia.

He was arrested by Lansford police on March 1 along West Bertsch Street in the area of Boyer’s Market.

Stichter is currently an inmate in the county prison and is facing a parole violation in Berks County.

Sentencing was deferred as Matika ordered the adult probation office to prepare a presentence investigation report.

Joshua Todd Barlip

, 27, of Lansford, pleaded to one count each of possession of drug paraphernalia and driving under suspension - DUI related.

He was arrested on July 16 by Lansford police at Abbott and Springgarden streets.

Sentencing was deferred.

Each defendant sentenced must also pay court costs of about $1,000 and a $50 per month supervision fee while on probation or parole.
