Walbert to lead Lower Towamensing board
Lower Towamensing Township supervisors held their re-organization meeting on Monday afternoon, followed by their first board meeting of 2016.
Ronald Walbert was named the chairman of the board of supervisors, while Brent Green agreed to step in as vice chairman. Supervisor’s compensation is fixed at $1,875 per year as per the Second Class Township Code. Compensation is paid on a monthly basis of $156.25 per month.Supervisors Walbert, Green and Bernard “Jesse” Mendez also agreed to perform work on the roads in the event that work crew employees need their assistance. Green will represent the township as the voting delegate at the state convention.During the regular board meeting, Green agreed to continue as the tax delegate to the county’s Tax Collection Committee. The supervisors decided to find an alternate in case Green is not able to attend a committee meeting.The supervisors will continue to meet on the second Tuesday of each month at 7 p.m., except for the next year’s reorganization meeting which will be held on Monday, Jan. 2, 2017.Christine Wentz will continue as the secretary/treasurer with a salary of $39,977 per year for 40 hours of work per week plus benefits. Jillyan Sterling was appointed as the part-time assistant township secretary.Other part time employees, at a pay rate of about $15.25 per hour, include:• Township Road Foreman – Charles Shupp• Township Assistant Road Foreman – Kathy Wallace• Additional employees – Timothy George and Timothy Strohl• Casual/As Needed employee – Paul StrohlThe supervisors also approved the following non-elected township officials:• Solicitor – James Nanovic• Zoning Officer – Duane Dellecker• Township engineering firm – Carbon Engineering , and Ron Tirpak of Carbon Engineering, engineering firm for Act 537• Sewage Enforcement and Well Enforcement officer – Sean Corey• Civil Defense and Emergency Management – Rory Koons• Temporary chairman of Vacancy Board – Gerry Madden. He will replace Barry Wentz, who is stepping down for personal reasons.• Zoning Hearing Board – James Ord, Keith George and James DeRosa• Zoning Hearing Board solicitor – Holly Heintzelman• Planning Commission – Angela Farrell and Gerry Madden, two years; Jay Mullikin and Mike Davis, three years; and Janice Mack, four years.The 2016 Fee Schedule was also provided at the meeting. The fees cover administration costs, permits for various types of construction, as well as those for zoning issues, fireworks and moving permits. Some of the basic fees include:• Driveway permit – $75• Fireworks permit – $25• Moving permit – $5, waived if moving within the township• Well permit – $75During the regular board meeting, the supervisors voted decided to advertise in February for the next garbage collection contract. The current contract ends in March, Green said. They discussed planning a meeting with potential garbage haulers to discuss the needs of the township. A date for a possible meeting was not determined.
