Rain plays havoc with District 11 schedule

In a game that seemed doomed from the start, the District 11 semi-final match-up between Bangor and Pleasant Valley didn't even make it through one full innings before rain and lightning caused the postponement of the game until Wednesday at 5 p.m. The game will be resumed with Pleasant Valley's Kelsey Miczak on first and Crystal Morales batting with two outs and the Lady Bears leading 4-0 in the bottom of the first.

After getting the first two outs of the game on strikeouts, Pleasant Valley's Tracey Duebler suddenly found herself in trouble with runners on second and third. The jam didn't last long as Duebler came back to strikeout Bangor's Samantha Zeruth to end the inning. The Bears came to life in the bottom of the inning when Kiersten Griesback doubled to left field with one out. From there, the hits just kept on coming with Brittney Bonser and Madison Shaneberger collecting back-to-back doubles to put Pleasant Valley up 2-0. Erin Happel replaced starting pitcher Melissa Langdon for the Slaters and was greeted by an RBI single off the bat of Duebler. One out later, Miczak delivered an RBI single to put the Bears up 4-0 and as the play ended, umpires spotted lightning in the area, dictating a mandatory 30-minute delay.Shortly after the start of the delay, a steadier, heavier rain started to fall and numerous lightning strikes were seen. Before the initial 30-minute delay had even elapsed, the field had turned into more of a pond than a softball field and the game was postponed. The winner of the Bangor and Pleasant Valley game will face the winner of the Parkland and Northampton game that was set to follow. That game will now be played Wednesday following the completion of Pleasant Valley and Bangor. In 3A softball, the Palmerton-Bethlehem Catholic game was postponed and moved to this afternoon at 4 p.m. at Moravian College. The Class A and Class AAA Baseball Championships at Coca-Cola Park were postponed until Thursday.Schuylkill Haven and Tri-Valley will meet at 4 p.m. and Tamaqua wioll square off with Blue Mountain at 6:30 p.m.Chuck Hixson
