Towamensing suffers first loss

A good game was expected and delivered as Towamensing traveled to Valley East for a District 18 11-12 year-old Little League clash clash on Monday.

The two teams were the only unbeatens left in the winner's bracket of the double-elimination tournament.Valley East scored all of its runs by the home run during its 6-1 victory over Towamensing.Rich Green of Valley East blasted a solo shot over the left-center field fence to score the game's first run in the top of the second inning."Once we broke the ice, the kids were able to play with some confidence," said Valley East head coach Dave Amentler. "We knew it was going to be a battle with two good pitchers on the mound. Our kids were ready and swung the bats well."Towamensing responded in the bottom of the inning with a solo shot of its own. Matt Doherty continued his very strong tournament play with a shot over the right field fence to even up the game. Unfortunately for Towamensing, Doherty's shot would be its only run of the game.Valley East starting pitcher Alex Amentler pitched five strong innings, striking out nine and walking just three. The Valley East coach said that Amentler settled down and got better as the game progressed. It was the first time this tournament that the Towamensing offense was limited.Towamensing had two pinch-hit deep fly ball outs in the bottom of the fifth inning that were hit directly at the Valley East center and right fielders."I know they can hit the ball better than this," said Towamensing head coach Randy Schoch. "That kid threw some heat and we may have been a little intimidated at first. But everyone started to eventually get good swings, even our bench came in and hit the ball very hard."Valley East did most of its damage in its five-run third inning. Alex Kubishin had a three-run homer, followed by an A.J. Jordan two-run blast."Every night a different guy is stepping up and you never know where it's going to come from," coach Amentler said. "One through twelve in the order, everyone is capable of coming up with a big hit. They're a very fun group to be around. I told the kids we aren't done yet and we have to take care of business this weekend."Towamensing starting pitcher Luke Eitner only threw three sub par pitches. Eitner's stuff on the mound was keeping Valley East off balance for most of the game, striking out 12 batters in six innings."We aren't out of this yet and we can certainly be right back here on Saturday by picking up a win on Thursday," said Schoch. "I told the kids to keep their heads up because they're certainly a better hitting team than what they showed today."We'll have a nice practice on Wednesday and be ready to go out there and smack the ball on Thursday."Valley East 015 000 - 6 5 0Towamensing 010 000 - 1 4 1Amentler, Coyler (6) and Jordan; Eitner and Bollinger.
