JTASHOF inducts Craig Zurn...One of Jim Thorpe's Finest
Craig Zurn graduated from Jim Thorpe Area High School in 2007 as one of the most outstanding, fastest and exciting football players ever to appear on the gridiron at Jim Thorpe Area High School.
He lettered for 4 years in football and 4 years in baseball and served as Senior Class Treasurer and a member of the National Honor Society in 2007.In 2004, Zurn began his career as a member of the only regular season undefeated 10-0 team in Jim Thorpe history. This team won the Anthracite 8 Football Championship and were runners-up in the District 11 Class 3A playoffs.In his senior year of 2006, the team finished with an 8-3 record and, again, won the Anthracite 8 Football Championship and qualified for the District 11 playoffs.During his high school career, Zurn rushed for 2,007 yards, passed for 1,659 and had 678 receiving yards. He had 43 TD's; 19 rushing, 16 passing, 2 receiving, a 92 yard kickoff return vs. Tamaqua, 3 punt returns and 2 interceptions.As a result of these achievements, Zurn earned a dazzling amount of personal awards:He was named to play in the Pennsylvania East/West Football Game (the only football player in Jim Thorpe history to receive this honor).He was named to the WNEP-TV Super 16 Dream Team (only the 2nd player to be named from Jim Thorpe).Along with those two awards, he also was named to the Reading Eagle All-Anthracite Small School Football Team; the Republican & Herald All-Area Football Team First Team Defense; the Schuylkill County Football Coaches Association North All-Star 1st Team Defense; PA Football News All-Academic Gold Team 2006-2007; 2006 Anthracite League 1st Team Offense and 2nd Team Defense; the Jim Thorpe High School MVP; the Jim Thorpe H.S. Offensive MVP and to the Anthracite 8 League's All-Decade Team (2001 to 2011).He received college scholarship offers from Lafayette, Holy Cross, Albany, Colgate, Georgetown, and Lehigh which was the school he selected to attend.While at Lehigh, Zurn lettered for 3 years as a kick returner/slot receiver. During the 2010 season, Lehigh went undefeated in the Patriot League and finished with a season record of 10-3. They defeated Northern Iowa in the first round of the NCAA FCS (College Football Series) playoffs and lost to Delaware in the second round.Zurn graduated with a B.S. in Business and Economics with a major in Management. He is currently employed by C&S Wholesale Grocers, Inc. in Bethlehem, PA and lives with his parents, his brother Jake and two sisters, Tricia and Lauren.The Jim Thorpe Area Sports Hall of Fame banquet will be held on Saturday, August 16 at the Jim Thorpe Memorial Hall.
