Unbeaten Bombers blitz Bangor
The 2014 Palmerton grid iron squad is showing that losing football games is a thing of the past. The Bombers dominant 54-13 Colonial League win over Bangor on Friday proved just that as their victory improves them to 3-0 on the season, which is the first time they've seen that mark since 2007.
Anytime you can hold the opposition to just 15 yards of total offense things are probably going to workout in your favor. What's even more impressive is that the Bombers "D" didn't allow a first down until the 7:50 mark in the third quarter."I was really pleased and impressed with the way our defense played tonight," said Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak. "They all did a good job. Our front four was great, our linebackers cleaned up, and our secondary didn't get fooled by their play action. Our scout team deserves a lot of credit too for doing such a good job mimicking their single wing-T offense. It was a great all around effort by everyone."The defense was definitely impressive, but the offense was downright explosive. The Bombers showcased that they certainly don't have a shortage of weapons. It was a coming out party of sorts for two Bombers with sophomore quarterback Garrett Perschy and senior wide receiver Dominic Shivone having breakout games. Perschy got the job done with arm and his legs, throwing for 215 yards and two scores, while running for another. Shivone was just as dynamic, catching two touchdown passes and running for another. With a strong rushing attack anchored by Mike Stasko and Tre Nelson the addition of a passing game could work wonders for the Bombers in the upcoming weeks."I just want to give all the credit to the offensive line," said Perschy. "They gave me the time to throw the ball and it all starts upfront for us. I was able to make plays tonight because I was well protected. We have been struggling offensively over the last few years, but there's no denying the amount of weapons we have and how dangerous we are. It makes my job a lot easier, that's for sure."Palmerton was dominant from the onset, forcing Bangor to punt on its first four possessions. The Bombers took advantage quickly, scoring five times in the first half. Rai Washington punched in two rushing touchdowns, Perschy found Shivone for two pitch and catches, and Shivone added another rushing touchdown. Before anybody could blink it was 34-0 and the Bombers never looked back.Another vital component to Palmerton's success on the night was its ability to force turnovers. The Slaters fumbled the ball a total of six times on the night, losing three, and Nick Sander picked a ball off right outside the Bangor end zone in the second quarter. It was simply a prime time performance from the Bombers, but coach Walkowiak was adamant that his staff and his football team are not resting on their laurels."We're not hungry because when you're hungry you can eat enough and then get full, we're driven and we're motivated," said Walkowiak. "This group is never satisfied and they want to keep getting better everyday and every game. They've worked hard to get to this point and it's a testament to the kind-of kids they are. We have plenty of work still to do and plenty of football left to play."
