Indians' play is on the 'Marks'

Lehighton's performance was right on the mark.

Or maybe more appropriately, right on the Marks - as in Joe Marks.Marks did it all in Tuesday's Schuylkill League boys soccer match against Jim Thorpe, putting a "mark" on all of his team's goals in a 5-0 Lehighton victory.Marks scored his first career hat trick and added two assists to lead the Indians to an easier than anticipated rout."We're starting to put things together offensively the last couple of games," said Lehighton coach Dave Yob. "Joe did a really nice job of creating and finishing scoring opportunties today."This was the second straight game that our offense played well. We scored nine goals Saturday against North Schuylkill and then we built on that against a nice Jim Thorpe team today."Although the two teams came into the game with similar records, it was obvious from the start that Lehighton was playing on a different level. The Indians controlled most of the possession and had almost all of the scoring opportunities during the opening 20 minutes before finally getting on the board when Marks took a pass from Frank Bokan and buried the ball in the corner of the net from the right edge of the 18-yard box.The junior forward followed that with his second goal of the game, a header off a perfectly executed corner kick by Dan Baka with 15:18 left in the half."I thought we might have been a little more competitive," said Jim Thorpe coach Tony Dixon. "But Lehighton played well and we made some mistakes."We have struggled offensively the last few games and that's been putting us in a hole. We're getting some promising build-ups, but we can't seem to make that final pass. We need to do a better job of finishing off our possessions."Finishing off possessions is something Marks and the Indians had no problem accomplishing.Lehighton quickly put the game out of reach in the second half. Patrick Lawler made it 3-0 off a feed from Marks with 38:10 remaining. Marks got his third goal on a penalty kick and capped the scoring with a sensational assist that Bokan put in the net with 13:53 to play."Jim Thorpe is a rival so this was a big game," said Marks. "We came out and did a nice job passing and moving."My strengths are my speed and my movement off the ball. Tonight I was able to cash in on some chances thanks to great assists from my teammates."For Jim Thorpe (3-3, 2-2), one of the few bright spots was the play of midfielder Luke Morris. Morris had the Olympians' best scoring opportunities and did a nice job of possessing and distributing the ball."Luke had a nice game," said Dixon. "He's played well all season for us."Today, he made some great passes and also had some strong shots that just missed."The victory improves Lehighton's record to 6-2 overall and 4-1 in the league."We are playing well defensively and we have a lot of offensive weapons," said Yob. "Joe (Marks) and Dan (Baka) have both had hat tricks already this season and Zach (Christoff) is right up there with them as far as firepower is concerned. We also have a couple of young guys in Frank Bokan and Patrick Lawler who can put the ball in the net."We can still play better, but I like where we are heading. I'm seeing improvement and that's what you like as a coach."
