Bombers bounce back against Catty
CATASAUQUA - How do you bounce back from a 68-21 loss the week prior?
That's a question that the Palmerton faithful were probably asking each other throughout the week over their cup of morning coffee. On Friday night, they received their answer as the Blue Bombers showed the utmost resiliency, trouncing host Catasauqua 44-7 for a big time Colonial Leage victory.Just a week ago Palmerton gave up 537 yards of total offense to Southern Lehigh, forcing zero turnovers. However, this week was a totally different story and a totally different Palmerton "D." The Bombers gave up just 211 yards to the Roughies and forced five turnovers. It was a very dominant effort from the get go against a Catty team that was coming off a big win against Northern Lehigh."The kids were very resilient in the way they played tonight and I have to credit my staff as well because they really got our guys prepared for tonight," said Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak. "Our kids did a great job of putting the Southern Lehigh game behind us, you have to your lessons from those types of games, we licked our wounds quickly, and we came out and played good football against a solid Catty team."It seems that when the Bombers get going fast the success follows and that's exactly what happened on Friday. A 23-yard field goal by Rich Roselli got Palmerton on the board on its opening possession. Dominic Shivone intercepted a Cristian Burker pass on Catty's first possession, which setup Palmerton's next score. Just three plays into their second possession the Bombers' Trey Nelson rumbled 55 yards to the end zone on a perfectly designed draw play to then give them a 10-0 advantage, heading into the second quarter. The second quarter was the big quarter for the Blue Bombers as they scored 28 unanswered points. Two rushing touchdowns by quarterback Garrett Perschy, a 20-yard score by Gerry Pereira, and a 13-yard plunge by Rai Washington gave Palmerton a comfortable 38-0 lead at intermission. Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak did his best "Robin Hood" impression spreading the wealth to a number of Bombers players."We have stressed all year that's the way we want to play offense," said Walkowiak. "We have enough talent to spread the ball around, nobody has an ego, they just want to win and you can't ask for much more than that from your kids. It also makes us a lot tougher to stop and prepare for when we're able to do that."For the Rough Riders, the story on the night was the turnovers and when they did have an opportunity to make something happen they couldn't take advantage. A few times on the night the Catasauqua receivers were able to get open, but either the pass wasn't there or they could bring the ball in. It was just a rough day at the office for Catasauqua, who probably watched its District 11 Playoff hopes dissappear with the loss."We made a lot of mistakes, which is uncharacteristic of the way we've played the last two weeks," said Catasauqua coach Phil Dorn. "We came out flat and we just didn't make the plays tonight. I'm kind-of scratching my head about the way we played, but the credit has to go to Palmerton. They're a good football team and they took it to us tonight."
