Flea-flickers spark Thorpe comeback

MAHANOY AREA - For anyone who has ever played backyard touch football, these plays are drawn in the dirt and called flea-flickers, razzle dazzles, or trick plays.

In last night's 29-22 win over Mahanoy Area, Jim Thorpe pulled two tricks out of their pre-Halloween bag to reverse a strong Golden Bear performance and to remain unbeaten at 7-0.The Olympians are making a habit of second half comebacks and last night proved to be no different. The Bears (3-4) controlled the game and the time of possession for much of the first half. On JT's first offensive series, Mahanoy's Mason Ryan picked off a tipped pass to set the Bears up with a first and ten at the JT 15. Four plays later, quarterback Ryan rolled out, then cut back up the middle for a 3 -yard touchdown run and a 6-0 MA lead.In the entire first half, the Olympians managed only 52 yards rushing with no pass completions while gaining just three first downs. The Bears nearly scored again, but on a fourth and goal from the six, Ryan was dropped in the backfield for a six- yard loss.At the start of the third quarter, on a fourth down a bad punt snap gave the ball to the Bears at the JT 14. Lenny Dulsky ended a three play scoring drive with a four- yard run to increase his team's lead to 14-0."Our counter game was just not working," said JT coach, Mark Rosenebrger. "They were shooting their linebackers into the gaps. But we noticed they were keeping their safety down in the box so we thought we might hit a big pass play."And so the stage was set for a double reverse toss back to the quarterback bomb to the wide receiver. From Robert Heller to Ryan Carroll to Shane Snisky who then found a wide open Alex Steigerwalt down the middle of the field. Steigerwalt turned and made a back pedaling over the shoulder grab for a momentum- changing 56- yard touchdown play."We pretty much were able to stop them a good part of the game," said Bears' coach Dave Holman,"but the trick play caught us completely off guard."We practice this play every week," said Snisky. "Our coordinator sent it down to the field when he saw that the safety was playing up."The ensuing Mahanoy drive stalled and then it was Heller's turn to keep the fire hot on his team's momentum. After gaining only 41 yards in the first half, he tacked on 59 more, highlighted by a 30 yard TD scamper and with Bailey Becker's extra point kick, the score was knotted at 14.A Bears' fumble early in the fourth quarter gave the ball back to Thorpe at their own 48. From the MA 39, Heller slanted left and then cut back against the grain for a 36 yard run to the MA 4 where two plays later, he plowed in from the one to put Thorpe up by seven with eight minutes to go."In the first half their shifting before the snap was messing up our reads," said Heller, who gained 168 yards on the night. "I got hyped up at halftime. Every time I got the ball, I wanted to make a big play."The Bears would not go down easily. They capped off a nine play drive on a fourth down at the JT 21 with their own trickery as Ryan pitched the ball to Evitts who passed to Michael Wronski for a first and goal at the four. Two plays later, Ryan broke up the middle for touchdown. The Bears then lined up for the tying extra point kick, but knowing that Thorpe is excellent at PAT blocks, holder Yedsina took the snap and passed to Wronski for the two point conversion and a 22-21 Mahanoy Area lead. With 3:18 to go and down by one, Thorpe drove to the Bear's 37 and with1:22 remaining, Snisky faked a backfield reverse and found Steigerwalt all alone again for what proved to be the winning score.Snisky completes just two passes in the game, but both were for long touchdowns."Two big pass plays and Heller's downhill running was our feature tonight," said Rosenberger. "Now we have a big week ahead of us to get ready for North Schuylkill."
