Raiders roll over Devils

SHENANDOAH - Great things happen when you win the battle in the trenches on both sides of the ball.

Tamaqua's run-first offensive approach was too much for Shenandoah Valley, as the Raiders rolled past the Blue Devils, 47-0 for an Anthracite Football League win.The Raiders set the tone in the first quarter as it put together a 15-play touchdown drive that chewed up about seven minutes. Bud Moyer scored his first of four touchdowns on the drive and racked up all of his 174 yards on the ground in the first half."We're definitely a run first team and we always try to establish that," said Tamaqua head coach Sam Bonner. We had a nice long drive and we were able to establish the ground attack early on. Bud has been doing a great job for us. He's approaching the 1,000-yard mark as a junior and that's a great thing."On Shenandoah's first possession after the initial Raider score, Ian McCole hooked up with Jeremy Urbanavage for a 29-yard gain. Unfortunately for the Blue Devils, Tyler Skripko picked off McCole on the very next play. The momentum was on the Raiders side to stay, as Zeke Wassell caught a 54-yard touchdown and then picked off McCole on the very next possession. Tamaqua took a 35-0 halftime lead into the locke room and never looked back."The heart of our defense is no doubt Tyler and Trevor Skripko," Bonner said. "They're two hard nose tough kids. They're the leaders and without them we wouldn't be as good as we are. That being said, a lot of our young guys up front are making a lot of plays for us too."Tamaqua sure was as impressive defensively as they were on the offensive end. Shenandoah didn't pick up its second first down until the last play of the third period. The Blue Devils were held to just 85 yards of total offense."We need to start moving the ball and that starts with the blocking," said Shenandoah Valley head coach Randy Maksimik. "Tamaqua was very physical and quick up front and we couldn't get a surge tonight. There's no easy game on the AFL schedule, we need to keep getting better. We try to focus on the positives and we need to just keep working."Ernie Shilko proved that Tamaqua can get the job done through the air in the contest. Shilko threw for 85 yards and two touchdowns during the victory."We're throwing some more stuff at him each week," explained the Tamaqua coach. "We've been fortunate lately that we haven't had to throw a lot lately, but he's been very efficient. He's been managing the team and making plays when he has to."Tamaqua is now on a four-game win streak with a record of 5-2. Its last three opponents have combined for just eight total points."We have a tough schedule at the end of the season," said Bonner. "We knew we had hard working good seniors coming into this year. We thought we improved as a team after the Jim Thorpe loss, and it was important that we bounced back. The kids have done a great job at answering the call and we've been on a streak that past few weeks. We've done what we were supposed to do."
