Marian rallies to defeat Mahanoy

MAHANOY CITY What makes special teams so 'special?' The fact that a game's complexion can change in the blink of an eye could be the reason.

After Mahanoy Area took a 14-0 lead midway through the second frame, Marian's K.J. Snerr pulled off a 91-yard kickoff return to sway the game's momentum back in his team's favor, cut the Colts' deficit in half, and spark the beginning of 21 unanswered points, to propel the Colts to the 21-14 win over the hosts for a paramount victory."This win was a big time win," Marian head coach Stan Dakosty said afterward. "We beat a 'Class A' team last week, and we beat a 'Class A' team this week. That's two in a row and they're two hard-fought wins."The physicality of the game was obvious to those in attendance, as the brutality was felt on each down. However, the Colts maintained their level of play long enough to hold off the Golden Bears for the come-from-behind win."Obviously, we were down in the first half," running back Nick Sully said. "We weren't really playing our best early on, but everybody pulled together at halftime. The coaches came in and gave us some great keys to focus on and fix our mistakes. Then we came out strong in the second half, we knew what to do and we executed. It's just a huge win."Sully, who picked up the brunt of the running game for the Colts after Snerr went down with an ankle injury early in the fourth, scored the game-winning score and blocked well all game, along with plenty of big plays on defense."He is just the heart and soul of this football team," Dakosty related. "He's been great for us all season, and tonight you got a chance to see his ability running the ball."Early on, Mahanoy looked to play spoiler, as it built a 14-0 lead, on Mason Ryan rushing scores of one and seven yards. However, in the second half, the Colt defense limited the Bears' attempts at moving the ball effectively, forcing three straight punts. That defensive stand allowed Marian to mount the comeback and eventually take the lead and hold on down the stretch."At the break, we definitely fixed the small mistakes we were making in the first half," Sully added. "We made those adjustments and we stopped their running game."With just under six minutes left in the third, Marian took the ball on its own 41 and pushed the ball 59 yards in seven plays for the tying score, as Snerr capped it off from the 18. Snerr carried the ball five times for 46 yards in the drive to keep it moving.Following another Golden Bear punt, the victors took over on their 15-yard line and amassed a ten-play, 85-yard drive to take the lead, as Sully leapt in from the one. Midway through the drive, Marian faced a third-and-10, but Snerr outmaneuvered defenders for a 29-yard run that finished with him injured. From that point, Ethan Kuczynski's two carries for 12 yards and Sully's pair of totes for 16 yards finished off the score."This puts us in a great position," Dakosty said. "We have two tough games here, with Shenandoah and Tamaqua, so we're not looking past anybody. But we're right where we want to be."
