Kuehner helps Bears retain Bucket

It's no secret Pleasant Valley has plenty of weapons on offense.

The Bears have 10 players that have scored at least two touchdowns this season, led by tailback Austyn Borre's 14.But Borre has missed the last two games with a hamstring injury, leaving the team without its workhorse during a critical part of the season.Despite Borre's absence, the Pleasant Valley offense hasn't missed a beat, rolling to wins over East Stroudsburg North and Pocono Mountain East to run its winning streak to six games. The catalyst in those victories has been quarterback Brandon Kuehner, who has averaged over two touchdowns and 200-yards passing in the last two weeks.Kuehner had arguably his best game of the season this past Saturday, throwing for 241 yards and three touchdowns to lead Pleasant Valley to a 42-20 win over the Cardinals in the annual Ol Oaken Bucket game. The performance was more than enough to keep the Bears' postseason hopes alive and give Kuehner the second Times News Player of the Week award of his career."It's a great honor," the senior said. "To have a decent game in such a significant game that has so much tradition, playing for the Bucket for over 50 years, really means a lot to everybody. Not only for the team, but all the people that come to support us throughout the community and the school."The fact that we were able to bring the Bucket back home for the sixth straight year really meant a lot."After starting the season 0-3, Kuehner who has thrown for 1,472 yards and 16 touchdowns has been a vital part of helping Pleasant Valley remain in postseason contention."Brandon's been doing a very nice job," Pleasant Valley coach Dave Pacchioni said. "He's been with us since his freshman year, playing JV the last three years and now he finally got his shot this season."From Week 1 (a 49-14 loss to Easton) to last week there's been a big difference in how he's played. I think he feels more comfortable back there and I think our chemistry as an offense has really come together. The offensive line is playing really well and the skill guys know their roles right now and he's done a great job commanding the offense. If things go wrong, he's the guy that brings them all together, coaches them up and makes sure that they're all on the same page."While Kuehner has been the one that has made the offense go in recent weeks, he's quick to mention it wouldn't be possible without all the talent around him."It helps me a lot to know that we have that much depth on our team," he said. "We have a lot of weapons to spread the ball around in all areas."Eric (Marbury) did a good job of stepping in for Austyn, who's obviously a great running back."But we also have great players like Demetrius Green, Kevin Cruz, Tanner Parascando, Danny Hunter .. .just everybody. Having guys like that, and being able to get them the ball and watch them make plays is really nice. And the offensive line has given me plenty of time to throw and that's helped me a lot."The support will be needed this week against an undefeated Stroudsburg (9-0) team, something Kuehner is well aware of."I hope we go out and play the best game of football that we can and live up to our potential," he said. "We feel like as a team, that if we can play the way we're capable of and utilize all the weapons that we have, then we should have no problem competing in the game and winning."Pacchioni knows it won't be easy, but with an offense that's clicking and a team that's playing for a chance to be in the District 11 Class AAAA playoffs, the coach likes his chances."I'm expecting a lot out of them," Pacchioni said. "Defensively, Stroudsburg is probably one of the toughest teams we've faced all year and our offense has to put up some points if we want to win the game."But if we can just execute and make sure we're disciplined in what we do, I think we will have a very successful night."
