Marian, Pius X to battle for title
Six will be the magic number in the District 11 Class A championship match between Marian and Pius X.
Not only does each team have a number of skill players who can put six on the board, both teams are riding a five-game win streak heading into the contest. Whichever side can keep momentum will earn a sixth consecutive victory and the District 11 title."This is where you want to be when you start the season; to play during week 12," said Marian head coach Stan Dakosty. "This is taking a step further than the Eastern Conference playoffs last year. Everything you work toward up until this point is on the line now."The Colts' winning streak includes a 35-12 District 11 semifinals rout of Williams Valley last week. Marian star tailback K.J. Snerr continued his impressive junior campaign, running for 153 yards during the win over the Vikings. Snerr had a ton of help from sophomore signal caller Ethan Kuczynski, who completed 70 percent (7-of-10) of his passes and threw two scores."Sometimes a good offense is a good defense," explained Dakosty, whose team scored on five of its seven possessions against the Vikings. "We have athletes on each side of the ball and we're going to play our game. We're going to tweak it a bit for Pius, but not do many different things than we have been."Dakosty noted that Noah Goldberg has made a huge impact since moving to defensive end about a month ago. Goldberg played a huge role during two separate Marian goal-line stands during last week's vitory. Look for Nick Sully to be a major factor during the championship game as well. Sully averages nearly six yards per carry offensively, and leads the Colts with 153 tackles this season."They're an 'Oregon type' of high school football team," said Dakosty about the Royals' fast-paced offense. "They spread the field, throw the ball, and normally only have one or no tailbacks in the backfield. They're going to push the tempo of the game and try and get their athletes in space."Marian's defense will have to be at its best to try and contain Pius quarterback Tre Jordan. Jordan is having a sensational junior campaign and the numbers don't lie.Jordan has completed 68 percent of his passes for 2,310 yards with 31 touchdowns and just three interceptions. The Royals' signal-caller is averaging 210 passing yards per game, which will be much different than any type of offense the Colts have seen thus far in 2014. During last week's 26-7 victory over Mahanoy Area, Jordan was held to just 89 yards through the air, but scored twice on the ground."He's been a kid that has listened to everything that I've taught him," said Pius X head coach Phil Stambaugh. "Tre works very hard. He's an intelligent quarterback and he's having success because he puts a lot of time into football. I'm proud of him and expect him to continue to play well."The Royals last won a district title in 2011 and are excited to once more have that opportunity."This is our goal every year," explained Stambaugh. "Getting here is something we've been working toward for a long time. We're going to have to shut down their (Marian's) run game."They seem to live off of the big play and we can't let them have it. The pass game has been a staple of our offense, but we need to be able to run the ball behind our offensive line which has been playing great."The Colts will look for Angelo Maskornick and Nico Agosti to continue making plays at the wide receiver position to help keep pace with the Royals. Both Colt receivers average over 20 yards per catch and have combined for 10 touchdowns this season."I'm very proud of this team," said Dakosty. "They're a great group of young men who represent our school very well. We've had some great support from all of the families, fans, and the entire studnet body and we truly appreciate all of it."
