Opportunities remain for variety of species
While today marks the close of two-week, statewide firearms deer season, there are many opportunities to hunt a variety of game in Pennsylvania beginning Monday through the month of February.
For deer hunters, the statewide flintlock muzzleloader and late archery deer seasons run concurrently from Friday, Dec. 26, through Saturday, Jan. 10. In Wildlife Management Units 2B, 5C and 5D those seasons remain open through Saturday, Jan. 24.In the Special Regulations counties of Allegheny, Bucks, Chester, Delaware, Montgomery and Philadelphia antlerless deer with each required antlerless license from December 26 through January 24. This is a change from last year when all of WMU 5C was included in this special season.Flintlock muzzleloader season participants may take an antlerless deer with a WMU-specific license, DMAP permit or a general hunting license deer tag. During the late season, antlered deer may be taken only by bowhunters and flintlock muzzleloader hunters who possess an unused general hunting license deer tag.Hunters using archery or muzzleloader licenses, and hunting with those special sporting arms, are not required to wear fluorescent orange, but are encouraged to do so, especially when hunting in the Special Regulations counties where the antlerless season for firearms users will also be in progress. Hunters using conventional firearms in those counties must wear 250 square inches of fluorescent orange.Those hunting small game may return to the field beginning Monday for squirrels, ruffed grouse, rabbits and pheasants. Specific dates are: squirrels - December 15-24 and December 26-February 21; ruffed grouse - December 15-24 and December 26-January 24; rabbits December 15-24 and December 26-February 21; and pheasants December 15-24 and December 26-February 21.Only male pheasants may be taken in WMUs 2A, 2C, 4C, 4E, 5A and 5B; male and female pheasants may be taken in WMUs 1A, 1B, 2B, 2D, 2E, 2F, 2G, 2H, 3A, 3B, 3C, 3D, 4A, 4B, 4D, 5C and 5D. There is no open season for the taking pheasants in any Wild Pheasant Recovery Area in any WMU.Hares, snowshoe rabbits and varying hares may be taken in WMUs 3B, 3C and 3D December 26-29. In all other WMUs they may be taken from December 26-January 1.Dove hunting returns for the third of this year's three split season from December 27 through January 1.Furbearer hunting seasons continuing through the winter months include: red and gray foxes, until Feb. 21, including Sundays; raccoons, until Feb. 21; and bobcats, in designated WMUs, from January 20 through February 10. There is no closed season for coyotes, possum, striped skunks and weasels.Furbearer trapping seasons include: beavers, December 26-March 31; mink and muskrats, until January 11; raccoons, skunks, opossums, foxes, coyotes and weasels, until Feb. 22; bobcats, in designated WMUs from December 20-Jan. 11; and fishers, in designated WMUs, from Dec. 20-25. Cable restraints must be used for coyotes and foxes.Duck seasons are: North Zone December 23-January 10; South Zone - through January 15; Northwest Zone December 27-January 1; Lake Erie Zone - through January 3.Regular Canada goose seasons are: all of Pennsylvania except for the Southern James Bay Population and the Atlantic Population Zone, December 18-January 15, and February 2-28; Southern James Bay Population Zone, December 15-January 23; Atlantic Population Zone, December 15-January 26.Light and snow geese seasons are: Atlantic Population Zone, through January 26; conservation hunt, January 27-April 24; Southern James Bay Population Zone, through January 23; conservation hunt, January 24-April 24; Resident Population Zone, through February 28; conservation hunt, March 2-April 24.
