ES North hangs on to edge Bears
If you were at the East Stroudsburg - Pleasant Valley boys' basketball game last night and you looked down at your cell phone at any particular moment, you probably missed any of these spectacular plays during the Timberwolves' 52-50 win over the Bears.
A slam dunkA missed slam dunkGreat passes for easy lay ups.Blocked shots above the rim. Both teams took on the identities of their school's mascots in aggressive man-to man-defenses that challenged every shot in every period. The T'wolves jumped out early as Will Kaszura' side jumper at the 3:55 mark lifted his team to a 7-2 lead, but PV's defense pitched a shut out for the rest of the period. Ron Moore's basket off a feed from Eric Marbury with 15 seconds left gave the Bears their first lead at 8-7 with one period in the books. In the second quarter, ESN utilized its size and muscle down low to charge out with a seven point run that started with a slam dunk by Anthony Cruz. Joe Cartagena scored six of his ten points on the night with baseline layups."We wanted to use our size to isolate in the post and it worked well for us early on," said T'wolves coach Jon DeJesus. After falling behind at 19-13, PV stormed back on long range shooting from Eric McKulski who scored seven from the perimeter, and three-pointers from Nyem Naravez and Kevin Wisser to grab the lead at 22-21 with 1:19 left."Our strategy against longer teams like ES North is to try to spread their defense out and for a while there we were successful," said Bears' coach Matt Gould. The third period offered the fans more of the same with physical defense and athleticism from both sides that resulted in hard earned baskets. Three times the game was tied and there were four lead changes. The Bears were led by Bryan Sharpe who scored on a long three, a drive down the lane lay and a free throw that evened the score at 33-33 with 50 seconds to go."We wanted to close up their penetration, but they managed to drive to the hoop to stay with us," said DeJesus."We were able to move the ball up court with good tempo," said Gould. Yet when we had opportunities to get and stay in front our threes rang in and out."The T'wolves threatened to close out the game with an 8-0 run half way through the fourth period. Dan Quiles side jumper on a feed from Arian Azemi pushed ES North to a 41-33 advantage, matching its biggest lead on the night, but back again came the Bears. Wisser nailed another three with three minutes to go to make the deficit at 45-41. After ESN's Azemi fed Justin Kasiappouh for two, PV's Naravez's layup kept the margin at four with 1:50 left. Melquan Kirtin then hit a short jumper to increase the T'wolves' margin at 49-43.With 26 seconds remaining. Kirton made both ends of a one and one to basically seal the ESN victory with."Despite some of our guys playing sick tonight. I thought we gave a great effort," said Gould. "We can only go forward and stay focused if we are going to make the playoffs because every game counts now."Sharpe led all scorers on the night with 13 points for the Bears, followed by Eric Mikulski who added 12.ES NORTHAzemi 0-0-0-0, Quiles 2-2-2-7, Bellinger 1-0-0-2, Kusiappouh 3-3-7-9, Kazura 2-0-0-4, Cruz 1-0-0-2, Neweris 0-1-2-1, Cartagena 5-0-3-10, Kirtin 3-4-5-10, Wiggins 2-3-6-7.
