Fillies capture fourth straight division title
MINERSVILLE - The Marian girls defeated Shenandoah Valley on Saturday in unusual fashion in the Schuylkill League Division III tiebreaker game.
The Fillies had just two field goals in the whole second half with none of them coming in the crucial fourth quarter. But they capitalized at the foul line and on defense to stun the Lady Blue Devils, 39-28.The win gives the Hometown team its fourth straight Division III championship. As a result of the win, Marian will be playing Division I champion North Schuylkill at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Pottsville's Martz Hall. The game was far different than the last time the Fillies played on Thursday against Williams Valley when they lost 71-69 in overtime.Marian made just eight field goals all night, three of them in the second quarter when it catapulted into a 21-9 lead. Shenandoah could never battle back from that deficit.Although Marian head coach Paul Brutto declined to single any Fillie out, there's no overlooking the contributions of 5-8 senior Abbey Whildin, who had a game high 19 points and pulled in five rebounds. From the foul line, she sank 11 of 14 attempts.Speedy junior Vanessa Whitecavage also had an excellent performance with 13 points, including two treys, six rebounds, and two steals.Marian took 34 shots from the free throw line, making 21 of them. In the fourth quarter, the Fillies were 13 for 19 on foul shots, with Whildin making an impressive seven of nine.Whitecavage helped the Fillies take a first quarter lead that they never relinquished with two first quarter three-point shots. The Blue Devils took a three-point lead early, but Whitecavage answered with a three-point shot from well left of the key hole to tie it.At the close of the quarter, with Marian leading 7-6, a long jumper by Whitecavage made the score 10-6.Then it was Whildin's turn to shine on the scoreboard, scoring seven of her team's 11 total points. The defense of Marian let the Blue Devils have just three second quarter points - all on a three-point play by leading scorer Marcella Creasy. The center had a total of eight points for the night.Brutto said after the game, "I just like the way everybody played. To be honest with you, I don't think anybody did that much more than anybody else."He said he was especially happy with the defense following that loss Thursday when the team gave up 71 points."Shenandoah's a pretty talented offensive team, also," he said, noting that a sluggish defensive performance could have made the outcome different. The coach pointed out that Whildin was matched with Shenandoah's leading scorer and kept her under doubles. "She did a very nice job," Brutto said, adding, "But they also have other kids who can score, so any time you hold a team like this to 28, it's good.""Our team defense on Thursday was as bad as it can be. Today we really showed up and there was a difference," he said. Both teams had trouble connecting on baskets, with Marian making six of 31 field goal tries and Sheandoah connecting on seven of 35.This was the third meeting between the two schools. Marian scored in the 30's in each of the contests. The first time they met in December, the Fillies won, 35-26.On January 24, Shenandoah took the victory, 47-38.SHENANDOAHDeMalis 0-0-0-0, Nieddu 1-4-6-6, Teaschenko 2-3-4-7, Gallo 0-0-0-0, Creasy 3-1-1-8, Wargo 0-0-0-0, Snitzer 3-0-0-7, Najera 0-0-0-0, Michalik 0-0-0-0, Parker 0-0-0-0.
