A couple of local athletes medaled for Shippensburg University to help both the men’s and women’s indoor track teams win the PSAC Championship at Edinboro over the weekend.
On the men’s side, Palmerton grad Austin Shupp, a freshman just a couple weeks removed from injury, nearly came away with a league title in the 60-meter hurdles. He recorded a PR for the second straight day and broke Tyrek Nelson’s school record – running second in a blistering 8.22 seconds (just .03 seconds behind league champ Steven Morgan of ESU). Sophomore Eric Hertzog of Tamaqua also recorded a new personal best, placing fifth in 8.40 seconds. The me finished first for the fifth straight year with 190.5 points, 57 points better than second place Slippery Rock.Palmerton’s Lauryn Solt, a sophomore, finished fifth for the Red Raiders in the high jump, clearing clearing 5-4 1/4 on her first attempt.
Shippensburg scored 122 points, to defeat Slippery Rock by eight points.Palmerton grad Lanny Buck cleared 15-5 (4.70 meters) for the Kutztown Golden Bears to finish fourth at the PSAC Indoor Track and Field Championships at Edinboro over the weekend.Buck cleared a career-best in the pole vault (16-6.75) which was good for third in KU's history and sixth in all of Divison II at the Last Chance Invitational on Feb. 21.He set a NCAA mark in the pole vault (15-9) at the Metro Team Challenge back on Jan. 23 which was also a NCAA Provisional mark.Buck remains the lone Golden Bear with an NCAA provisional mark this indoor season. He will learn later this week if he will compete at the NCAA National Championships on March 13-14 in Huntsville, Ala.The Golden Bear senior has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Championships two straight years.
