Lady Bombers back on track

Palmerton head coach Robert Hock has had to shuffle his pitching rotation during the week with starting hurler Kendra Pekurny nursing a hip injury.

After using Reese Dugan to finish out a loss to Salisbury on Monday and to pitch an inning in Tuesday's suspended game at Palisades, Hock went with his No. 3 starter Shelby Gower against Moravian Academy on Wednesday and the junior took advantage of her teammates big hits for a 12-2 five-inning Colonial League victory. Gower allowed just two hits."She (Shelby) is very capable of throwing strikes," said Hock afterwards. "That's her strong suit, control. We probably have two more games this week, so we kind of have to watch how many pitches they throw and it was a good day for her to come in. I also wanted to use our No. 2 pitcher (Dugan) and just go from there."Shelby is very consistent and we knew she would hold her own out there and she keeps the ball low generally and it's tough to hit. We have confidence in all of these kids whether it be pitchers, batters or fielders."The Bombers (3-1, 3-1) had a pair of three-run homers in the contest to back up Gower's performance and the first came in the bottom of the opening frame when Janel Tracy bounced a long fly ball off the fence in left field. Steph Brinker and Darion Jacoby, both who had singled to lead off the inning, scored ahead of her. Ashley Lalik followed with a triple and scored on a fielder's choice by Erika Easton to give Palmerton a 4-0 lead. The Lions (0-5) came back with two runs in the top of the second to cut the Palmerton lead in half thanks to back-to-back Bomber errors.Gower closed the door the rest of the way while her teammates were padding her lead.Alyssa Acker reach on an error and courtesy runner Jocelyn Russo scored on a Moravian error in the second. In the third, the Bombers tacked on three more runs as Lalik, Olewine and Megan Peck all crossed the plate.Acker slammed a three-run homer in the fifth scoring Easton and Olewine giving the Bombers a 10-run cushion."We actually had nine hits the other day even in a loss," said Hock. "But we didn't get the runs across when we needed them."We didn't practice outside on our infield once and the first time we saw one was when we played Saucon Valley. These girls play enough softball that it's second nature to them."Acker and Lalik both had two hits for Palmerton, while Grace Marmaras had a hit and scored a run for the Lions. The Bombers travel to Southern Lehigh on Friday and could have a makeup game on Saturday.Moravian Acad. 020 00 - 2 2 3Palmerton 413 4x - 12 13 2Ryczek and Cowen; Gower and Acker.
