No. Lehigh and So. Lehigh split

The spring season isn't the only thing heating up, as the Colonial League track and field competition is entering the peak of the season.

A ton of senior leadership helped Northern Lehigh split its dual meet against Southern Lehigh on Tuesday. The Northern Lehigh boys remained consistent, as they defeated Southern Lehigh, 90-59. However, the Lady Spartans won in impressive fashion against the Lady Bulldogs, 114-36.The Bulldog boys off to a hot start in 2015. Northern Lehigh is now 4-1 overall (its only loss was a one-point defeat to Notre Dame a week ago)."We're off to a good start right now," said Northern Lehigh head track and field coach Mike Lehtonen." "We're going to hit a bunch of good teams coming up in the future, but we'll go against them and see where we are."The senior leadership of the Bulldogs team seems to be keeping the entire team on a sucessful pace.Nathaniel Rex of Northern Lehigh was victorious in the 200 meter dash and 300 hurdles. Fellow senior Drake Pristash finished immediately behind Rex in the 300 event."I was a little bit behind in the turn, and I really started to lay it on during the straight," as Rex explained his 200 meter dash win. "Fortunately, I ended up with the win. With the warm weather, you don't have to worry about staying loose as much and you don't have to worry about cramping up. It's a lot of time in the weight room and time on the treadmill over the winter to get to this point. We really feed off each other at practices; it's been exciting to see the team start to develop as a whole throughout the year."Nate is one of the hardest working guys on the team," said Lehtonen. "He's always looking for something to get better at. He experienced his first 400 today; we're always trying to get him in different events. He made the finals last week at Jim Thorpe in the 200-meter dash. He's a pretty intense kid and we're very happy to have him on the team."Another senior Bryce Moser edged fellow senior stud Gavin Kemery in the 1600. Kemery had a victory of his own in the 3200 event."The competition is the greatest," explained Moser. "It's friendly competition and everyone becomes better friends throughout each season. I felt pretty good. The weather is a little warmer and it made for a better race today. My goals are to just keep dropping the time. Everyone on this team always supports one another. Gavin (Kemery) has a great future ahead of him and he is one of the greatest competitors."The Northern Lehigh seniors seem to lead by example, as underclassmen such as Everette Bevans are beginning to shine. Bevans, a sophomore, was the winner of the triple jump and long jump events."He had a big day today for us," said the Northern Lehigh coach. "We always talk about the meet the following day and we will be talking about him. He was one of the unsung heroes today, and it was eye opening that he finished very high."Jessica Olewine and Michaela Rex were the standouts of the Northern Lehigh girls team. Olewine claimied vitory in the triple jump and long jump competitions, as Rex won the Javelin with a throw of 88-11. Brianna VandeBunte was one of the Spartans' top performers, as she won the high jump and 800."Jess Olewine is well known and has had a great career." said Lehtonen. "Her sister Jill (Olewine) is a freshman and has been a very nice edition to our team. Erika McKay is one of our senior distance runners who does a very nice job for us. We're very happy with the way we are performing this year."BOYSNo. Lehigh 90, So. Lehigh 59100 - 1. Andrew Groff (LVC) 12.1, 2. Floyd Snyder (NL), 3. Ryan Fowler (SL); 200 - 1.
