White eliminated in semis

The District 11 Class AAA Singles Tennis Tournament played out pretty much according to form on Friday at Saucon Valley High School.

Included in those results was Pleasant Valley senior Jon White advancing to the semis as the tournament's third seed after beating Will Kyaw of East Stroudsburg North in the quarterfinals. White's tournament then came to an end in the semifinals when he lost to Emmaus' Matt FitzMaurice.White methodically worked his way through the tournament with straight-set wins over Nazareth's Mike Fischler and Freedom's Ross Sonnenblick on his way to meeting Kyaw. As has been the case throughout the tournament, which began on Wednesday, players were met with a cold, biting wind that changed the course of many shots. For White, concentrating on his opponent helped him to block out the weather."It affects the match, but I just stay focused and try to keep the wind and everything else just in the back of my mind and try to play my game," he said.White did play his game and picked up a 6-2, 6-0 win over Kyaw, moving into a semifinal match with No. 2 seed FitzMaurice. Like White, FitzMaurice had been on auto-pilot throughout the tournament, easily advancing to the semis with a 6-1, 6-0 win over seventh-seeded Nate Lyman of Parkland in the quarters.FitzMaurice continued to breeze through the first set, winning 6-0. In the second set, White didn't shy away from trying to battle back into the match, but ultimately fell short, falling 6-2 to be eliminated."Matt's tough," said White after the match. "There are some tough players in the higher seeds and he's definitely one of them. I thought I played well, but he just beat me today."White admitted to being disappointed that he didn't reach the finals, which will be played at Lehigh University on Monday, in his senior season."You always want your senior season to be great, but I've done well and I played hard and that's what you have to do," he said.White also made an impression on FitzMaurice, who was the District 11 runner-up last season and returns to the finals again this season."He's tough. You always know he's going to play you hard and you can never think that you've got him beat," said FitzMaurice. The junior from Emmaus will face Parkland's Nick Kshatri in the finals. The two have had a number of battles throughout their high school careers, being from rival EPC conference schools. Kshatri, the tournament's top seed, downed fifth-seeded Brady Wyant from Stroudsburg in the other semifinal match. In AA singles, John Yurconic, the tournament's No.2 seed, will face Zach Shaff of Moravian Academy. Shaff is the top seed.
