Colts run win streak to 12
A rivalry game serves as the perfect opportunity for a team on a win streak to falter, especially a rivalry with the reputation of Panther Valley and Marian.
However, this year's Marian baseball team seems focused and determined to overcome any type of obstacles as it downed rival Panther Valley, 11-1, in six innings. The Colts' victory over the Panthers was their 12th straight and with their performance on Wednesday they certainly don't show any signs of slowing down.In the first, Angelo Maskornik got the Colts started, knocking in two runs with a sharp double to left center field. The Maskornik smash brought in KJ Snerr and Mason Evitts to give Marian a 2-0 lead after one."We always tell our guys to be aggressive at the plate and we've been doing a good job of doing that and making contact," said Marian coach Tony Radocha. "To be successful in this league or any league for that matter you have to hit consistently and fortunately we've been able to do that this season."The Colts continued to play consistent throughout the game unlike the Panthers who had a tough time in the pitching department. The Panther Valley pitching staff combined to walk 12 batters, which of course doesn't give a team much room for error. Unfortunately, for the Panthers they had four errors on the day as well."We just let too many guys on base today," said Panther Valley coach John Cooper. "Against a team as talented as Marian you have to limit the opportunities you give them to score. Also, we just had too many errors and we didn't make the plays that we should've made in certain situations. We really need to come together as a team and finish the season strong."The Colts added three runs between the second and third inning to boost their lead to 5-0 after RBIs from Nick Kubishin and Joe Nahas.Kubishin was a big reason for the Colts success on the day as he reached base every time he came to the plate. He finished the day with two hits and four walks with an RBI."I haven't been hitting the way I'd like to this season, but a day like today could get me right where I want to be," said Kubishin. "As a team we've been hitting well all year, so I was glad I could help out today. We're just really rolling right now and everything has been clicking for us."The Colts pitching wasn't too shabby either as Nahas and Dante Salerno combined to let up just six hits with three of them coming from the Panthers Tristan Blasko. Nahas pitched the first three innings for the Colts, while Salerno finished the Panthers off.Salerno was also solid from the plate as he was the catalyst for Marian's big six run inning in the sixth."I had a solid day on the mound and Joe (Nahas) did a great job of setting me up for success," said Salerno. "I was just looking to throw strikes and be consistent because I know my defense is very good. We just need to keep getting better and keep improving. I think the key for us is that we're a very confident group. We go out there every day believing that we can win."It's no secret how well Marian has been playing this season and with the postseason approaching Radocha still wants his team to play with a very intense edge."We've put together such a nice season and that's a testament to how hard these guys have worked to get here," said Radocha. We have to finish the season strong and avoid any let downs. There's still a lot of baseball to be played.Marian 212 105 - 11 7 2Panther Vy. 000 001 - 1 6 4Nahas, Salerno (4), and Snerr; Micholik, Hafer (4), Taras (6), and Goida. W - Nahas. L - Micholik.
