PV duo advances to quarters

HELLERTOWN - It's hard to beat any team whose skillset compliment one another so effectively.

On Wednesday, Pleasant Valley's District 11 AAA doubles tandem of Jon White and Erik Ammermann showed why they were deserving of the second seed in the tournament and what they are capable when both are gelling. The Bears' duo breezed through Pocono Mountain East's squad of Tristen Boheim and Zyang Lin, 6-0, 6-0 in the first round.East couldn't seem to handle White's serves that led to a plethora of aces, and weak returns that Ammerman was able to smash back over the net for easy points."One thing we stressed (before the match) was our serving, Ammermann said. "We really wanted to serve consistently well today and we did."Pleasant Valley head coach Mark Allison agreed with Ammermann."We definitely served the ball well and didn't double fault much," said Allison. "That was key. We're playing well, and we played the net great. Jon was able to put a lot of balls away. We're going to have to keep it going because the competition is going to get tougher."Both seniors agreed that having a ton of experience helped them keep composure, as they were the last scheduled match in the first round and finished the first contest without a blemish."This was my first year playing singles, but I've played doubles for three years, Ammermann said. "I'm comfortable playing on a doubles court and I'm confident of what I can do out there."White concurred, "I had a ton of confidence because we played solid doubles throughout the entire tournament last year. I just wanted to have fun, but wanted to play solid this year as well."Pleasant Valley continued to play solid, as it defeated Emmaus in the second round, 6-1, 6-3.Emmaus made up some ground in the second set, as they trailed the Bears by just a 4-3 margin and were on serve. This time, the Bears behind a few crushing Ammermann forehands, took the next two games to advance to Friday's quarterfinals."We never saw either team we played today so we had to focus on playing our own game and not worry about them," explained White. "I like going midrange in the box so I can reach and use many more angles. I can put away shots that are a little bit deeper."The Pleasant Valley coach knew his two athletes would succeed together."I knew Erik would be a strong doubles for Jon (White) coming in," said Allison. "We won district doubles last year with Jon White and Jon Walmach. I knew Erik would step in and do a great job. Erik being so good close to the net really helps them compliment each other. Last year Walmach also preferred the net."The buzz around the Saucon courts was that the Bears were going to be a tough out during he tournament. Pleasant Valley will take on East Stroudsburg North's seventh-seeded duo of Will Kyaw and Isaac Schefer on Friday at Parkland, 12 p.m."That's the nice thing about tennis," Allison said. "These guys all know each other and everyone gets along with each other. It's a great sport. When you're out on the court you compete and want to win. Off of the court, there's good sportsmanship and good friendships."
