Bears fall in title match

BETHLEHEM This was one that Jon White and Erik Ammermann really wanted, but it just wasn't meant to be.

White and Ammermann came into the District 11 Doubles Tournament as the No. 2 seed and wound up facing top-seeded Nick Kshatri and Peter Harrison of Parkland in the finals. While things played out perfectly for White and Ammermann during the first four rounds of the tourney, the finish wasn't what they hoped for as they dropped a 6-2, 6-2 decision on Monday at Lehigh University. As it turned out, serves played a major part in deciding the outcome of the match. Parkland was able to break serve four times in the match, while Pleasant Valley was unable to break a serve against Parkland."Both of them are very good servers, they place them so well, so it's tough to return and break, definitely," said Jon White.Parkland also came in knowing that it needed to battle the Pleasant Valley serves and would need to get some breaks if they were to have a shot at winning the match."We returned Jon's serve pretty well," explained Harrison. "We knew that Jon has a massive serve, because we've seen him through juniors and through tournaments, so we weren't expecting to be able to break him, but we broke one of his serves and that was nice."After Pleasant Valley won the first game of the first set, Parkland rattled off wins in five straight games, before Pleasant Valley won a game to make it 5-2. The eighth game of the set was a battle, but Parkland came out on top to win 6-2.The Bears again went up 1-0 in the second set, but Parkland broke serve in the third game to go up 2-1 and stretched the lead to 3-1. With White serving, Pleasant Valley battled to pick up a win and were right back in the match at 3-2. Parkland was able to break Ammermann's serve in game number seven and then close out the set at 6-2."We really just couldn't get into a groove in the return game. We were putting the shots back where they wanted them and they took advantage of that," said Ammermann."They just played really solid doubles," added White. "A lot of the games came down to just a few points, so I really can't complain too much. We could have closed out better, but overall, it was solid."Parkland will advance to the PIAA Doubles Tournament May 22-23 at the Hershey Racquet Club. The win for Kshatri and Harrison was a bit of a payback, at least toward White, who teamed with Jonathan Walmach to down the Parkland duo in last year's semifinals. White and Walmach went on to win the District 11 Championship. Both White and Ammerman are seniors, closing out their high school careers in district finals where they wanted to be, but would have preferred to have blue ribbons around their necks instead of the red ones that held the silver medals.Even though their careers ended with a loss, both players say they have no regrets and will look back fondly on their high school tennis careers."This year was a blast and just coming back here was amazing. Placing again in singles and doubles in districts, you really can't complain too much at all," said White, who will study nursing at Wilkes University after graduation.Ammermann didn't need to think long about the highlight of his tennis career at Pleasant Valley."District final, senior year," smiled Ammermann, who heads to Penn State to study Chemical Engineering. "This is the thing you remember, right here."
