Pottsville downs Marian in SL semis
PINE GROVE In postseason baseball, one mistake can seriously turn the tide on the outcome of a ball game.
On Wednesday night, it was one play that helped propel the Pottsville Crimson Tide past the Marian Colts for a 6-2 victory. The win advances the Tide to the Schuylkill League Championship game where they will face off with Blue Mountain tonight at Stump Stadium in Pine Grove."The play" came in the fifth inning with two Tide (17-4) players on base. The game was tied at 2-2 when Connor Hinchliffe hit a sky high fly ball to right field. The Colts (17-3) right fielder looked to have a beat on the ball, but a change in the winds made the play a bit more difficult. The ball dropped right inside the right field foul line, allowing one run to score. Then an errant throw to an unattended second base brought across another Pottsville run to give the Tide a 4-2 lead."I had a perfect view of it," said Marian coach Tony Radocha. "He was running with his head down and then when he picked his head up the wind blew the ball three feet to the left and the ball dropped in. We tried to make a recovery play and we were setup in a piggy back play for a relay home. It's a tough play and a tough way for the outcome of a game to be decided."The reason why the play was so tough to swallow for Marian coach Tony Radocha was because of how well the Colts were playing up to that point.Marian showed early they were going to be aggressive, getting out to a 1-0 lead after one. A Danny Keer double knocked in Robbie Hinkle, who also singled in the inning to get their bats going early. Not surprisingly, Pottsville had an answer, scoring a run in the second inning on a sacrifice bunt that was placed perfectly down the first base line that scored Gavin Hinchliffe from third.Pottsville would then take a 2-1 lead in the fourth off a wild pitch when Gavin Hinchliffe, who walked earlier in the inning came sliding across home plate for his second run of the day.Marian would then come back with an answer of its own, scoring off a throwing error from shortstop to first base when Joe Nahas hit a sharp grounder that way. The play resulted in a two base error that scored Danny Keer."We knew we were going to get a battle out of those guys, I mean they're 17-2 and all they know how to do is win this year," said Pottsville coach Mike Welsh. "There was no disrespect in us throwing our No. 2 guy in J.J. Spehrley, we just needed to put ourselves in a position to win back-to-back games. You have to tip your hat to Marian because they battled and I'm proud of our guys for making the plays when they had to."It certainly wasn't disrespectful to pitch the formidable Spehrley, as he gave up just two hits and one earned run, while striking out five in a little over three innings of work. Pottsville ace Eli Nabholz then pitched until the fifth inning with the hard throwing Travis Blankenhorn closing out the game for the Tide.On the Colts side, Joe Nahas pitched a pretty solid game as well. Nahas pitched five innings and gave up just four hits. It was definitely a confidence builder for the Marian ace, heading into postseason play next week."I'm really excited for the playoffs," said Radocha. "Our kids were in this game today and that's a confidence builder for us. You also have to credit Joe Nahas for battling that lineup all day because he did a great job. That's exactly the way you want to be pitching heading into the postseason."In the sixth, Pottsville added some insurance to seal the ball game when MLB prospect Blankenhorn took a Jarod Paisley pitch deep to right for a two-run homer. That made the score 6-2 in favor of the Tide and that's how the game would finish. The Schuylkill League Championship game is slotted for a 7 p.m. start at Stump Stadium in Pine Grove tonight.Marian will have to wait till next week to compete when they face the winner of the Shenandoah Valley and Tri-Valley first round District 11 A match-up.Pottsville 010 122 0 - 6 6 2Marian 100 100 0 - 2 3 3Spehrley, Nabholz (3), Blankenhorn, and C.
