Palmerton reaches final

ALLENTOWN - A team will typically have one window of opportunity to take control of a game.

Palmerton left the bases loaded in the second inning of its District 11 class AA semifinal match against Pen Argyl, which appeared to be that exact chance. After Palmerton starting pitcher Reese Dugan worked out of a jam in the fourth inning, the Lady Bombers trailed by just a 3-1 margin.Palmerton then created another window of opportunity to take advantage of in the fifth inning, and strung together four runs during the exciting sequence. Palmerton blanked Pen Argyl over the final two frames and earned a spot in the D11 class AA championship by defeating the Green Knights, 5-3.The last time the Lady Bombers reached the district title game was 1989.Though four innings, Palmerton tallied seven hits, but plated just one run and trailed by two. The damage could have been worse, but Dugan struck out Pen Argyl leadoff hitter Alyssa Weaver with two outs in the fourth inning and kept the Lady Bombers within striking distance."You have to like it when the batters are getting base hits," said Palmerton head coach Robert Hock. "Even though a few runners were stranded, they were on the pitches. Sooner or later things had to happen, even when we were behind they put some nice swings on the ball. I couldn't be more proud of the way they handled themselves at the plate."Palmerton did all of its scoring in the third and fifth innings. Jordan Boyer started the hit parades in both frames. Boyer scored a pair of runs and had a leadoff pair of singles that surely gave her team the momentum it needed."We were worried about her because she is a little reluctant to bat off of left-handers," explained Hock. "We gave her a nice pep talk, I told her I needed her to focus and that I wanted her batting in the lineup today. She took it to heart and certainly followed through, had a great game and got things started for us."Boyer and Steph Brinker had back-to-back singles to kick-off the big fifth frame for Hock's squad. Pen Argyl committed two errors in the inning, which helped Palmerton send a total of nine batters to the plate. Senior leader Lauren Campbell smacked a clutch go-ahead two-RBI double which plated Brinker and Janel Tracy and proved to be the game winner. The Palmerton catcher had a monster game offensively, going three for three from the dish."If those two runners weren't on base before my double, I would have never have drove in those runs," Campbell said. "I got bumped up from six to fifth (in the order) and felt like I could contribute a little bit more. I knew she was an outside pitcher, so I crowded the plate a little. I personally thought it was a pop-up, and didn't realize that I crushed it. We didn't really play the best against them in the regular season, but we started off solid today and we knew what to do."The regular season meeting between the two teams was certainly a different outcome as Pen Argyl defeated Palmerton, 6-0."We've had our ups and downs," explained Pen Argyl head coach Bill Schankel. "We've been too inconsistent throughout the season. We've played some games where we could beat anyone, and then we've played some like today when we have moments where we look like we don't know what we're doing. We had our chances but we couldn't come through with our hits early on. It was a little disappointing to go out like that, but Palmerton played a better game and deserved to win."Palmerton will take on eighth-seeded Notre Dame of Green Pond in the title game on Thursday at Pates Park at 4p.m."I couldn't be happier for them," said the Palmerton coach. "They've been together for a long time. This is it. There's no tomorrow for these seniors. We had a nice season; got a little careless down the stretch and the (Colonial) league game didn't go, as we wanted. They rebounded nicely, and hopefully they can keep bringing it. They're a great bunch of kids that play with a lot of heart; I want them to have a lot of fun, I love seeing that out of these kids."Pen Argyl 002 100 0 - 3 7 2Palmerton 001 040 x - 5 11 0Ashmore and Kresch; Dugan and Campbell.
