Yankees rout FT Hurricanes

A year after winning its first ever Keystone Senior Babe Ruth championship, Towamensing coach Don Hunter thought his team might be forced to rebuild this summer after significant roster turnover.

The Yankees lost two thirds of their starters from that group, and Hunter couldn't deny that several newcomers would have to step up in order for the team to compete this season. After some early season struggles, Towamensing seems to be hitting its stride of late, earning its second consecutive win with an 11-5 triumph over the Franklin Hurricanes last night."We're a good, young team. We're probably one of the youngest teams in the league," said Hunter. "I told them that they had some pretty good mentors last year that taught them how to win guys like Cody Peters, Lee Kuntz, Garrett Krome that really took some of these younger players under their wing last year."And now, these guys are playing like the guys that were their idols last year."They certainly looked more like the team that won the title a year ago yesterday in pounding out 15 hits, frequently using aggressive base running to get into scoring position."We were back to playing aggressive baseball like we were last year," said Hunter. "Running the bases well, stealing, which in turn forces the other pitchers to throw more fastballs if they think you're going to be stealing."That's still a great pitch to hit, and that's where we turned the game around."The Yankees (2-7) did much of their damage at the plate in just two innings, scoring three runs in the third and six in the fourth to take a commanding 9-1 lead. The third started with back-to-back two out walks by Austin Cook and Bruce Hettler,Cook, who finished with three walks and two runs scored, stole second, moved to third on a wild pitch and scored when Ben Weber reached on an error.Hettler scored from third on a balk, and Sal Melo, who was 3-for-5, knocked in Spencer Moyer, running for Weber, to give Towamensing a 3-1 lead after the third. The roll continued as the Yankees batted around in the fourth as Conner Hoglen (2-for-3) opened the inning with a leadoff double. Brodie Boehler (3-for-4, two runs scored) and Nick Bollinger (2-for-4) followed with back-to-back singles, with Bollinger's hit scoring Hoglen while an error allowed Boehler to come around to score to give Towamensing a 5-1 advantage.Following a pitching change, Hettler smoked a two run single to score Bollinger and Isaac George, who had reached on the error.Weber came up with a clutch sacrifice fly to score Cook, who reached on a walk. Melo got his second RBI when he knocked in Hettler to give the Yankees the big advantage, something the Hurricanes (3-4) couldn't overcome."That was where they got momentum," said Franklin coach Dirk Pompa. "After we give up the three (runs) with two outs, we go back out and give up six the next inning. That's pretty much where the game changed."I don't know why. We gave up a couple of walks, and walks always kill you."Towamensing also got a stellar performance on the mound from Weber, who struck out 13 in seven innings of work."I think the guys had a lot of confidence in him," said Hunter. "The guys also made a lot of nice plays in the field, which certainly doesn't hurt."After scoring a run in the first on Dave Everitt's single, Franklin didn't get on the board until the fifth when the Hurricanes loaded the bases.Alex Steigerwalt and Joe Heery opened the inning with back-to-back singles, with Steigerwalt scoring from third on a wild pitch while Heery scored by stealing home. Chris Valdez, who was hit by a pitch to load the bases, scored from third on an errant pickoff throw to cut the deficit to 10-4.The Hurricanes got one more in the bottom of the sixth when Steigerwalt scored from second on Heery's bloop single.Towamensing 003 610 1 - 11 15 4Franklin Twp. 100 031 0 - 5 5 5Weber and George; Everitt, M.
