Tamaqua advances with sweep

It was never going to be easy.

And why would it be?After Tamaqua dropped its last three games of the regular season to let the North Division title slip to Valley View, the task of upending Fleetwood in the qualifier round of the Schuylkill-Berks Legion playoffs seemed an unenviable task. While the seventh seeded Blue Sox had finished the year on a losing streak, the Wildcats entered on a five-game tear. Fleetwood also won both games of a doubleheader between the teams by scores of 4-3 and 10-5 on June 7.But this time, Tamaqua got a measure of revenge. The Blue Sox swept Sunday's doubleheader by scores of 6-4 (Game 1) and 6-5 (Game 2) to win the best-of-three series with the Wildcats."We played really well today," said Tamaqua coach Todd Heisler. "The big sticks were there and we got some great pitching."In Game 1, The Blue Sox had a 3-1 lead after five innings, but the Wildcats were able to pull ahead with three runs in the top of the sixth to take a 4-3 advantage, something Heisler thought might be too much for his team to overcome."When they (Fleetwood) scored those runs, I thought they were going to give it up," he said. "But we kept plugging away out there."Did they ever.Heisler's bunch proved its resiliency in the bottom of the inning, scoring three runs. A sacrifice fly by Peter Baddick scored Casey Rother to give Tamaqua the lead for good.Brad Fedor paced the Blue Sox at the plate, going 2-for-3 with one RBI and two runs scored. Eddie Titus also had two hits and one run batted in.Nate MacDonald finished 1-for-4 with three RBIs.Matt Roberts was dominant on the mound, recording nine strikeouts with no earned runs allowed. MacDonald was able to seal the victory with a dominant 1-2-3 bottom of the seventh to earn the save."Our kids were really psyched up out there after that," said Heisler. "That win gave them a lot of confidence, and I think from that point on they knew they had a chance to win this series."In the second game, Fleetwood got on the board early as Duncan Cahalan started a first inning rally with a double. Cahalan moved to third on an error, and came around to score on Kyle Ganert's single to give the Wildcats a 1-0 lead.Tamaqua responded in the top of the second, scoring three runs, highlighted by Pete Baddick's two-run homer.Baddick finished with three hits and three RBIs.MacDonald and Roberts each finished the second game with two hits apiece.Fleetwood cut the deficit to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth on an RBI double by Tyler Keller. The Blue Sox, who entered yesterday's doubleheader with a 6-10 record, added what proved to be three critical runs in the top of the sixth to make it 6-2.The Wildcats, 10-6 during the regular season, clawed back in the bottom of the seventh, scoring three runs with two outs, but MacDonald came in once again for the save, getting the final out to preserve the win."It's great to know that you have someone like that. He can shut it down," Heisler said of MacDonald. "But Connor (Hartung) pitched really well, too. We just couldn't get that final out for some reason."Hartung, who started, recorded seven strikeouts while giving up only one earned run.Tamaqua will now move on to the first round of the S-B double-elimination tournament, which will include the four other winners from the qualifier round in addition to division champions Valley View, Hamburg and Muhlenberg to round out the eight-team field. While the opponent is still undetermined, Heisler is confident his team is peaking at the right time and will be ready."I feel like we have a really good team this year," he said. "These kids are very good, but they've gotta want it. And I think they do."Game 1Fleetwood 000 013 0 - 4 5 4Tamaqua 003 003 X - 6 7 3Keller and; Roberts, MacDonald (7) and Rother. W - Roberts.
