Nalesnik big part of Lehigh's successful baseball season

Jacen Nalesnik owns just about every Lehighton baseball batting record imaginable.

However, the former four-year letter winning Lehighton catcher went through a bit of an adjustment period during his sophomore season at Lehigh University. After getting accustomed to playing the outfield in his second season, Nalesnik had a stellar second half of the year.Reflecting back at the 2015 season, he never imagined the success he would help lead the Lehigh University baseball team to."I started out terrible I was struggling for the longest time," explained Nalesnik. "Midseason I turned it around a little bit. By the end of the year, I put together a decent season. Everyone stayed confident in me and everything turned around. The freshmen experience helped me out a lot."The modest outfielder was a critical part of the Mountain Hawks' success this year. Nalesnik ranked third on the team with a .303 batting average and was second on the squad with 35 RBIs during his sophomore campaign. His average rose over 50 points from his freshman season."Early in the season, he learned a new position," explained Lehigh head coach Sean Leary. "Maybe that's why his numbers weren't as strong as they were in the second half of the season. He was the x-factor that put us over the hump in the second half. We looked back at our stretch of going 20-9, it was pretty indicative he was a big part of our success."One of Nalesnik's impressive highlights this year was collecting six RBIs during a contest against Coppin State. Another impressive accomplishment is the fact that he helped lead this Lehigh team earn a pair of College World Series games in front of a packed house at Louisiana State University."I was just hoping to get some wins but man, when we won the (Patriot League) championship and I found out we were heading to LSU, that feeling was something else," Nalesnik said. "It was awesome down there at LSU. They packed the stadium for that game. It was a great experience and a ton of fun being down there."Leary is extremely proud of this year's team."Everyone wanted to show that we are a front line division one team and we compete with anyone and I think we did that," Leary said. "Everyone recognized them (the team); we didn't go five feet without someone engaging us in conversation. It validates all of the hard work we've done. Those memories are why you play the sport; nobody will ever take away that weekend from them with that atmosphere and playing in front of those fans."It's no secret that changing positions on the baseball field isn't easy. The Lehigh coach praised Nalesnik and acknowledged his second-to-none work ethic, especially with the willingness to do whatever it takes to benefit the team."The coaches and players were 100 percent behind him because he was willing to make that sacrifice," said Leary. "He's very hard on himself. He has a high level of expectation. The seniors on this team knew what he was capable of, and knew he could help us win a championship when he plays at that level. I think our seniors did a great job of keeping his head in it. There were at least six or seven times this year when we were on the verge of winning a game and he's stepped up when it mattered most for us. He does whatever it takes to win. He trusted himself in the second half and fed off of his teammates belief in him.""We had a great group of seniors this year and they all knew coach's method," said Nalesnik. "He says that we all need to stick together as a team and we all bought in and at the end of the year we got the results we wanted."
