'Bye Bye Birdie' at Marian this weekend
Marian Catholic High Class of 2016 will present "Bye Bye Birdie" this weekend, with shows at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday.
The fictional story takes place in the late 1950s, centering around Conrad Birdie, a hip thrusting rock 'n' roll superstar akin to Elvis Presley; Albert Peterson, a songwriter desperate for success; and Rose Alvarez, Albert's secretary and longtime girlfriend.Albert finds himself in trouble when Conrad is drafted into the army. He and Rose come up with a last-ditch publicity stunt to premiere Albert's final Birdie song. Before he leaves for the army, Conrad will sing the new song and give one lucky girl a kiss on The Ed Sullivan Show.The lucky girl is chosen at random from the nationwide Conrad Birdie Fan Club and that lucky girl happens to be Kim MacAfee from Sweet Apple, Ohio. Soon after Kim is chosen, Rose, Conrad, and Albert set off for Ohio to prepare for the event; however, what can go wrong, will go wrong.Kim's father becomes dumbfounded at the prospect of being on The Ed Sullivan Show. Kim's boyfriend becomes disastrously jealous of Conrad.
