Carbon county authorities are investigating the finding of an unknown number of barrels submerged in the Lehigh River. Monday evening a fisherman called a federal hot line reporting the discovery of barrels in the Lehigh River just to the rear of Dunkin Donuts. Lehighton police were dispatched to the scene but discovered the barrels were on the Weissport side of the river. Police, along with Lehighton Fire Chief Jack Kuller and Carbon County Emergency Management Director Mark Nalesnik made their way to the submerged barrels. Nalesnik believes the barrels have been there for a period of time, as long as several months to a year. Nalesnik stated he is meeting Tuesday with representatives of the Department of Environmental Protection and will discuss the situation and possible removal at that time.
