Hackenberg is ready for upcoming season
UNIVERSITY PARK Entering his junior season, Penn State starting quarterback Christian Hackenberg showed nothing but class, a positive attitude, and a "can't wait to get started" mode as he addressed the press at Penn State's Media Day held prior to the start of the first scheduled practice on Thursday.
Everyone that sat behind the microphone thanked the media for showing up, including Hackenberg. It would be hard to expect anything else from the son of Nikki and Erick Hackenberg, who made quite a name for themselves on the volleyball court and football field locally before settling down in Virginia to raise their family.Christian made it quite clear that he would only answer questions about this year's Penn State season and nothing beyond that.He also said he is looking forward to leading the Nittany Lions to a great year. After a successful season as a freshman, Hackenberg had to take snaps behind an inexperienced offensive line last season. Despite some highs and lows, Christian had awesome starts against the University of Central Florida and in the season-ending bowl game against Boston College.Entering this season, Hackenberg has studied both those highs and lows to get him ready for the opener against Temple in Philadelphia on Sept. 5. Following that opener, the Lions will have five straight home games."You have to take everything you learn from all of the experiences," he said. "That's what I've done. I try to make sure I stay as process-oriented as possible, and focus at the task at hand. At the same time, you take those lessons and apply what you learn from them or you build off of them, whether it was a negative experience or positive experience."Hackenberg admitted that there were a lot of ups and downs last season and he faced adversity at times, but he played through it and stayed true to how he knew he could play."Hindsight is 20-20," he said. "You can go back and look at it, but there are a lot of things that I could have done to help on some plays that didn't work out that I didn't do at times."I know that those guys (returning offensive linemen) have worked extremely hard this off-season, especially this summer in terms of the film room. Coach Mangiro has done an excellent job with that bunch. I've also worked on a lot of those things I could have helped them with."In this camp, you're going to see a group that is extremely focused, playing with a chip on their shoulder. I'm excited for them. I'm extremely excited about the opportunity they have. It's going to help our football team and at the end of the day, that's what it is all about."He also thinks it will be a huge help having the same coaching staff and essentially the same offensive system for the second straight year."This is the first time I've ever been in a system for two years," Christian noted. "I think that year two is always the year that you see some jumps in a lot of areas. We're excited and we're working as hard as we can to make sure that is the case."Do we feel a lot more comfortable about it? We definitely do, and I think that's huge, having one year under the belt."Hackenberg said he is as extremely excited about entering this new season and having another new opportunity as he has been before every season."I'm a year older and I think this team is a year older in general," he said. "The entire team is excited about it and I think this camp is a great opportunity for us to see what we're all about this year."Right now we're focused on Penn State and what we have to do to get better, and a week before the opener we'll be focused on Temple."So it sounds like it's just what the doctor ordered. If the Nittany Lions take it one day and one game at a time, everything will play out. And it'll be just like old times in Happy Valley.
