Lehighton blanks Pleasant Valley
After an uncharacteristic 4-14 season a year-ago, Lehighton first year coach Karen Wall has sought to make some changes in how things were done. Under her guidance, the Lady Indian field hockey team is off to a good start through the first two games.
Saturday, Allie Rossino scored both goals in a 2-0 win over former Mountain Valley Conference rival Pleasant Valley.Lehighton started strong, forcing the action early on and putting Pleasant Valley on its heels."We came out strong. We played as team, moving the ball and passing, cutting very nicely and talking to each other," Lehighton head coach Wall said.Lehighton found chance after chance but could not break through. It controlled the tempo of play and had three penalty corner shots early. Meanwhile, Indian keeper Michele Bozilesky sat idle, needing to only save one shot."We just were not the team we should be. We came out a little flat and we didn't have the fire that we did (in Friday's win)," Pleasant Valley coach Angela Pachuta said. "(Lehighton) came out with fire and possessed the ball almost the whole first half and we were struggling to get it back."Pleasant Valley did mount a challenge that provided scoring chances that came just before half. The Lady Bears wrested momentum and put pressure on the Lehighton goal at the six minute mark. The Lehighton defense was steadfast in halting the attack."We just were not able to capitalize on those opportunities," Pachuta saidThe killer came just before half as Rossino, who scored a goal in a 2-2 opening game tie against Dallas one day earlier, slipped her shot past Pleasant Valley keeper for a 1-0 first half lead."That goal gave us the boost we needed," Wall said. "Allie was on. She had a strong game and has really come on for us this season."The Lehighton defense was key in the victory in making stops and transitions."What we are doing this year is making sure everyone has the mentality that when we have the ball we are all on offense, and when we don't, we are all on defense," Wall said.Rossino's second goal at the 8:40 mark of the second half sealed the game."My team gave me opportunities and I could not have done it without them," Rossino said.UNDER PRESSURE ... Lehighton kept the pressure on again as it peppered Pleasant Valley keeper Shannon Wasco for 16 shots on the day. Wasco made 11 saves.A LITTLE HELP FROM MY FRIENDS ... Maura Phelan had a good game and earned an assist on the first Rossino goal. Sage Miller earned an assist on the second.PRAISE FOR GRACE ... Lehighton's Grace Shanton was cited by coach Wall and Rossino as having a great game. "Grace Shanton brought the ball up and gave us many opportunities to score," said RossinoNO "I" IN TEAM ... Maddie Teno likes what she has seen from her Indian teammates in the early going. "We have a lot of chemistry this year. We are passing a lot and moving together as a unit which is important and helps us capitalize on scoring opportunities," Teno said.
