Northwestern bounces back, shuts out Bangor

On the heels of a 30-19 loss to Notre Dame - Green Pond in week one, the Northwestern Tigers looked to make a statement in week two. With the Bangor Slaters coming into The Jungle, the Tigers looked to come out firing on all cylinders and they did, walking away with a 39-0 win over Bangor.

The score could have been pushed up much higher, but coach Josh Snyder elected to go with younger players by late in the first half. By that point, Northwestern already had the lead up to 39-0 thanks to an explosive offense early in the game.Harry Hall ripped off a 76 yard run on the first play from scrimmage and Brandon Miller added the extra point. Little did anybody know, that Northwestern's game plan was to strike early and often and they would do just that, scoring 29 points in the first quarter alone."That's why we wanted the ball first, we just wanted to pound it right at them with no let up. We just wanted to pound it right away and it worked," explained quarterback Dylan Snyder. After struggling somewhat in his varsity debut last week against Notre Dame, Snyder commanded the offense and connected to Trevor Cunningham twice for his first two touchdown passes of the season."You could just see him out there, the way he was carrying himself. He's a heck of an athlete, he's a warrior. You could see what he could do out there with his legs and his arm, he threw a couple of touchdown passes, and he's only going to get better, every single week," said coach Josh Snyder."Last week helped me a little bit to get to know the offense a little more during game situations. I just felt a little more comfortable tonight," admitted Dylan Snyder, who is a senior.Coach Snyder was admittedly anxious to see how his team would respond after last week's loss and he made the decision to push them hard in practice this week to emphasize that they needed a lot of work in key areas."I think we responded well, we challenged them all week and we were tough on them in practice. It was hot, we didn't let up and it really worked," said Snyder. "This game was more about us than it was about Bangor. Just looking ourselves in the mirror after a tough loss and after a long summer of preparation."As for where the team is right now after getting off to a 1-1 start and facing a game against Pen Argyl (0-1) next week, it will be interesting to see how far the newfound confidence carries the team's quarterback and the rest of the team."Right now, I'd say we're good; we're not great," said Dylan Snyder. "We definitely can improve, no matter how good we are, we always can improve."MY WORK HERE IS DONE ... Harry Hall was pushed hard early in the game, but then sat for the entire second half, at least on offense. Hall carried 33 times for 181 yards against ND, but had just 10 carries for 146 yards last night.PUT ME IN, COACH ... With Hall getting a breather, Tyler Foster took over as the featured back for part of the game, Foster responded by rushing for 39 yards on seven carries, which were his first rushing yards of the season.THAT BALL'S OUTTA HERE ... Kicker Brandon Miller put three of his six kickoffs into or out of the end zone against Bangor. Miller also added a 24-yard field goal. This looks like a good place to start - Northwestern's average starting field position was from their own 41 yard line. Three of their five first quarter drives started from within Bangor territory.
