Bombers rout Bangor for third straight win
BANGOR - Coming off big wins over Wilson and Pen Argyl, Palmerton traveled to Bangor to face the Slaters, who were still looking for their first points of the season.
Despite the fact that the Bombers were so heavily favored, Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak and his squad didn't falter from their pre-game approach, taking care of the job at hand to deal the hosts a 40-7 Colonial League loss.Standout junior tailback Mike Stasko teamed up with quarterback Garrett Perschy for another scintillating offensive showing, as the Blue Bombers darted out to a 20-0 lead after one quarter, en route to the 3-0 start to the year."It's great just to get the win," Stasko admitted afterwards. "I do whatever it takes out on the field to help get the win for the team."It feels great to be 3-0 and we expected that. After the odds were against us to have a good season like last year, it's just been good motivation to overcome those odds and hopefully keep on winning."Even though the Bombers put out another outstanding showing, there are plenty of things that need to be corrected in order to maintain this high level of execution. With Palisades looming in the near future, Stasko knows what has to happen."We just need to sharpen up," he said. "We had too many stupid penalties and too many mistakes; we were too sloppy. Coach addressed that, we know that and we just need to improve on those areas and we should be alright."The 'sloppiness' didn't slow the winners down early, as they took four plays to move the ball 61 yards for a 7-0 lead, after Stasko broke a few tackles, found room, and raced to pay dirt.Their ensuing possession similarly resulted in another score, as seven plays spanned 58 yards and finished with another Stasko run of five yards. Junior QB Perschy highlighted the drive with a 14-yard run to start it off."We did what we had to do when we had to do it," Walkowiak said. "Stasko had a good game for us and I think Garrett threw the ball well and had some nice plays in the first quarter, and hit some key receivers."Perschy and Stasko, who have been playing together for almost 12 years, teamed up for the third TD of the night, as an 18-yard scoring reception put the locals up 20-0 after the first quarter. In the second, Perschy struck again, this time to senior wide receiver, Zach Buck (five catches, 92 yds, 1 TD), who brought in a 33-yard score to make it 26-0.Then, in the third, he found Stasko again for a 21-yard score for a 33-0 swell."Defensively, I thought we played a good game," Walkowiak said. "I thought we did a strong job up front."Calvin Koch had a good game for us at nose guard, Rai Washington had a good game at defensive end, there, so I think we controlled the line of scrimmage, and we put pressure on them when we had to.""RAI" OF HOPE ... Senior fullback Rai Washington returned to active duty this week and looked determined in each possession, finishing the game with 83 yards on10 carries, plenty of tackles and innumerable blocking assignments for Stasko and Co..OFF THE SCHNIDE ... Bangor's scoreless drought came to an end against the Bombers, as sophomore Jake Caserta intercepted a pass at his own 25 and raced away for a 75-yard interception return.PRINCE OF PERSCHY ... The standout quarterback's stellar season just keeps rolling, as he not only completed three touchdown passes on the night, but also connected on 15-of-27 passes in the game for 216 yards. He also managed to keep several drives alive with scampers on the ground.
