Cann clutch for Indians again

A good quarterback isn't easy to come by.

A good quarterback that's also a proven leader is even more of a rarity.Fortunately, for the Lehighton Indians football squad, they have a rare and special player with those very attributes, leading their offense each and every Friday night.Senior quarterback Tyler Cann has been under center for the Tribe for the past three seasons, helping them to a postseason berth in 2013 and 2014. Cann is a proven leader that has showcased his ability to win big games and improve not only each year he's been on the team, but throughout the season.Cann displayed his talents once again in one of the biggest wins for Lehighton since Tom McCarroll took over the program four seasons ago. The senior signal caller rushed for 53 yards and two scores, while throwing for 177 yards and two more touchdowns en-route to a 33-13 win over perennial Anthracite League contender, North Schuylkill."Tyler is one of the best kids and players I've ever coached," said McCarroll. "I've been raving about his toughness and football I.Q. since he's put on the Lehighton jersey, but he's evolved into a legitimate dual-threat quarterback. We can depend on him to carry out anything we need to do to win a football game."Cann's statistics back up his head coach's statement. So far this season, he's rushed for 148 yards and five touchdowns, while throwing for 418 yards and four scores.Even more impressive is Cann's efficiency. He has completed 29-of-38 passes with no interceptions. That's a video game like 76 percent completion percentage. Cann also leads an offense that is scoring 38 points per game."One of the things you have to admire about Tyler is his determination to improve," said McCarroll. "In the past we might have been a little hesitant in the play calling department, but this season's with Tyler's ability to throw the football so effectively we can really open the playbook. He's improved so much in that department. It makes your job as head coach a lot easier with a kid like Tyler as your quarterback."In most cases, there are two types of quarterbacks - the kind-of quarterback that will slide or avoid contact and the kind-of quarterback that welcomes the challenge of an oncoming hit. If you know football then you know there are positives with both styles of play. But I'll let you guess what type of quarterback Tyler Cann is?"Tyler isn't the kind-of kid that's going to shy away from contact," said McCarroll. "I think he actually looks forward to get that extra yard by powering through an opponent when he has to."For Cann and the Indians, a 3-0 start is exactly what the Tribe wanted headed into this week's match up with Blue Mountain.Spearheading the charge is a Lehighton senior class that has been waiting to make waves throughout not only the AFL, but all of District 11."We've all put in the hard work in the offseason and our coaches do a great job of preparing for us Friday nights," said Cann. "Last week was a big win for us, but we have so much more to accomplish. We have a tough Blue Mountain team this week, so we have to be at our best once again."
