Big second half lifts Tigers to win
WILSON - The Northwestern Tigers (3-1) came out flat against Wilson Saturday afternoon at Smith Stadium in Wilson Boro, but turned things around in the second half to pick up a 40-7 win over the Warriors.
"We were sloppy, at best, in the first half, at least offensively," said coach Josh Snyder. "I'm really disappointed with how we came out and played. We had a good week at practice, with the extra day and we were focused, playing with enthusiasm and then, to come out and show up like that offensively, was disappointing."Senior Harry Hall ran the ball 22 times for 198 yards on the day, scoring three times, once on a 61-yard jaunt from scrimmage. Quarterback Dylan Snyder threw for 72 yards, completing eight of his 13 pass attempts, including a 17-yard touchdown strike to Dylan Lobach.Northwestern's final two scores were set up by turnovers. Teagen Golden pounced on a loose ball to set up Snyder's pass to Lobach and Ryan Hippensteel intercepted a pass to set up the final scoring drive for Northwestern. For the second week in a row, Brett Schillinger returned a kick for a touchdown. Last week against Pen Argyl, it was the opening kick-off of the second half and this week, it was a punt. Schillinger let the ball bounce and he noticed a lane, grabbed the ball and ran hard through a hole, racing 65 yards into the end zone. Like last week's kick-off return, Schillinger's punt return was after the first Wilson drive of the second half failed and they punted on a fourth-and-six play. The return seemed to rejuvenate the team's offense."I saw a block coming down, got a good bounce, saw a little gap and it just fell into my hands and I shot the gap up the field," said Schillinger. "Everybody was jumping around and I feel like it kick-started our second half and we started driving."STREAKING ... Wilson scored with 7:55 left in the game to end Northwestern's shutout streak after 140 minutes, covering 11-plus quarters. The Tigers were trying to become the first Colonial League team to record three straight shutouts since Pen Argyl in 2011.STREAKING PART 2 ... When Brandon Miller had to punt on the first play of the second quarter, it broke a string of 104 minutes, covering nine-plus quarters that the Tigers didn't have to punt. Miller wound up punting three times, averaging just under 38 yards per kick.SHOWDOWN TIME ...
