Blue Devil 'D' shuts down PV
SHENANDOAH - Something had to give ... two winless teams trying to avoid an 0-4 start to the season.
A season ago Panther Valley staved off Shenandoah Valley in Lansford, now the Blue Devils got payback at Veterans Memorial Stadium Friday evening, when they counter-punched the Panthers (0-4) with a running attack, and a defense that produced a 13-6 victoryIt also marked the first win for Shenandoah Valley's new coach Kevin Bolinsky, and ended a 13-game losing streak in the Anthracite Football League dating back to last season, when the Blue Devils (1-3) went 0-10, before ending the season with a win over Kutztown in a contingency game for the lone victory of the season."They were so much bigger upfront and stronger than us," Panther Valley coach Matt Davis pointed out. "We just couldn't handle (Jeremy) Urbanavage; he was all over the field."The 6-2, 210-pound senior linebacker for the Devils recorded 12 solo tackles, including five in the Panther Valley backfield along with a fumble recovery. The scheme was to clog up the Panther Valley rushing attack, and put pressure on sophomore quarterback Hunter Kennedy."He just couldn't settle (into a rhythm)," Davis explained. "This was only his second varsity start and he will learn from it. They just found holes along the line and shot right after us. We've got to fix that… a lot of (other) teams are going to pick that up."Without question, the Devils stout defense had wrecked the counter running game the Panthers were trying to establish. Save for a 40-yard touchdown pass from Kennedy to Daniel Gilberry with 85 seconds to play that would be the lone offensive threat the Panthers could muster."We just knew going in that we had a really good (game plan) to stop their running game," mentioned Bolinsky. "We felt they would have a hard time matching up with Urbanavage and that trying to block him was going to be a very tough thing for them."DIFFERENCE MAKER. ... No question about who gets the accolades - Urbanavage. Panther Valley wasn't so easy to give in with its defense either. It allowed just one offensive touchdown when Shenandoah Valley had a short field to work with after a fumble recovery.OFFENSIVE HIGHLIGHTS. ... Both teams combined for only 123 yards rushing; Shenandoah Valley had 79 on 34 attempts, the Panthers 48 on 31 tries. Urbanavage led the winners with 14 attempts for 54 yards. Panther Valley's Ali Capobianco had seven carries for 22 yards. PV's Anthony Vavra was the game's leading receiver with three catches for 44 yards.MA CULPA ... When the officials met prior to the game outside the locker-rooms, the toss of the coin was made by head official Joe Cesari. Panther Valley deferred until the second half, and a Shenandoah Valley captain inadvertently said they would kickoff. Cesari wouldn't allow him to take the call back and the Blue Devils ended up kicking off in both halves.QUICK WHISTLE ... Early in the second half, a Panther Valley runner was stripped from the ball, and Urbanavage took off with what seemed like a 45-yard fumble recovery for a touchdown run. The officials said it was a mistake, gave the Panthers the ball back, and ruled the play null-and-void.
