Bombers fall in overtime to Pirates
The defense stole the show for the first 42 minutes of regulation in the Colonial League match up between Palmerton and Palisades.
It wasn't until one-minute, 40-seconds left in regulation that both teams put together an offensive drive that ended up in the end zone.It was in overtime however when the Pirates' Jared Colletti stole the show for the second year in a row with his right foot, as an extra point proved to be the difference in a 14-13 victory for Palisades."We all knew it on the sideline that he (Colletti) had a chance to win it on the last play again two years in a row," said Palisades coach Kevin Ronalds, of Colletti, who kicked what turned out to be a game-winning 21-yard field to beat the Bombers last season. "We're just glad he came through."In the end, special teams played a huge part in this game. But, our defense got us into overtime and special teams sealed the deal."There was a total of 13 consecutive punts between the Pirates and Bombers before the Bombers saw themselves sitting on the Pirates' five with 8:08 left in the game. On fourth and one, the Pirates stopped the Bombers' Mike Stasko for no gain to turned the ball over on downs. After that, the Bombers stood tall on defense again to force another Palisades punt.Palmerton finally put together an eight-play, 59-yard drive to hit pay dirt when Garrett Perschy scored on a 13-yard TD run.The Pirates answered right back with a 61-yard drive, which only needed only three plays when Austin Krauss hit Blake Cassalia in stride for a 54-yard reception. Colletti capped the drive with a one-yard scamper with 53-second left in the game. After a 68-yard return by Toby Sander with 42 seconds left in regulation gave the Bombers' life, it was another missed opportunity that came back to haunt them in the end. With the return setting them up in the red zone, the Bombers couldn't find the end zone. The Bombers set up for a 31-yard field goal attempt by Jake Taschler, only to see the Pirates' Anthony Fleck get his hand on the ball. After both teams found the end zone in overtime, one single point proved to be the difference, which accounted for the Bombers' first loss of the season."Hey, we have to execute," Palmerton coach Chris Walkowiak said. "Games really don't come down to that (a missed extra point). Obviously, looking at it, it did come down to that."But really, there were other plays that we had chances to put people away and didn't and we had chances to stop them and we didn't there. We will bounce back. This is a resilient group. If there is one thing I know about these kids, they're resilient."ANCHORS AWAY ...
