Thorpe's Heller is running wild

Vision is an underrated quality when it comes to the success of a running back.

Most people believe that you just need to be big and fast to be a great runner, but for Jim Thorpe tailback Robbie Heller this season is all about vision.Heller used all of his God given talent last Friday night, including his improved vision to help the Olympians torch Tri-Valley 35-0. His performance of 246 yards and three touchdowns has earned him the week four Times News Player of the Week.In Jim Thorpe's offense, it's pivotal for the running back to be able to make a quick read, make one cut, and explode through the line of scrimmage.Heller is one of the best in the business at that this season, scoring the majority of his 10 touchdowns off of big plays. Last Friday was no different either as he scored from 35, 53, and 65 yards out."I'm able to follow my blockers better this year and I'm definitely hitting the hole harder too," said Heller. "If you look at film of me from last season I didn't do that consistently, but this year I think that's what I'm most improved in."Heller appears to have improved greatly. The senior did rush for over 1,000 yards a season ago and looks to be on track to surpass that mark again.Through week four, Heller leads the Times News area in rushing with 692 yards, which is 67 yards ahead of last year's Times News Player of the Year, Harry Hall.Perhaps maybe his most impressive stat is that Heller is averaging 173 yards rushing per game at 9.6 yards per carry and gains a majority of his yards after contact. He then turns on the afterburners once he hits the second level."You can see Robbie's confidence growing every week and it should be with the way he's been playing," said Jim Thorpe coach Mark Rosenberger. "I believe the game has slowed down for him a bit this season as well."He's able to make that one quick cut and go and he's a strong kid, so he's not easy to bring down. He gained a lot of experience a season ago running the ball for us and he's just continued to get better and that's carried over to this season."Heller knows success in the run game all comes down to really one thing and that's offensive line play. When talking to Heller about his stellar play this season, the first thing he mentioned was his guys upfront, which is a Jim Thorpe offensive line group that is definitely an underrated group so far in 2015.With the losses of three or four starters in the trenches for the Olympians, many people didn't know what to expect. However, it seems everything is clicking on all cylinders as Thorpe is averaging 345 yards of total offense and 297 yards rushing per game."The offensive line is playing great and I wouldn't be able to be standing here right now receiving this award without them," said Heller. "I've said all season long this is the strongest physically we've been in the last couple years and we're showing that every week. We just have to keep playing hard, keep getting after it, and stay focused. There's a lot of season left to play and a lot of tough opponents still left on the schedule."
