Marian loses second

ORWIGSBURG - The extension 300 on Stan Dakosty's phone keeps getting disconnected for the past two weekends.

One of Pennsylvania's highly respected football coach's keeps shooting for elite status when it comes to victories. Just one win shy of 300 in an illustrious career that reaches back 39 seasons, Dakosty milestone is back on a holding pattern after Friday's second loss of the season here against Anthracite Football League rival Blue Mountain, 19-7And there is nothing flawed about the way things have unfurled over the past two weeks for the Colts (3-2, 2-2AFL); the heart of the AFL schedule - small school vs. big school - has caused the consternation.Throughout an ugly first half, in which Marian dished out a 19-0 lead, then had to try overcoming the loss of its best running back K.J. Snerr (knee), and a turnover-prone offense that had three fumbles (2 lost) and a pass interception resulting in the three score deficit."We turned the ball over four times, we don't do it intentionally, we don't mean to do it," Dakosty lamented on this damp, cold night. "That's just what we've been doing… we have to figure out a way to be cohesive, pull ourselves together and finish off plays."Blue Mountain (4-1, 3-1AFL) finished off all its plays when the opportunity was afforded. After the Colts fumbled with 5:10 to go in the first quarter at their own 29, the Eagles were six plays away from hitting the end zone. They used a 27-yard 3rd-down pass from quarterback Mason Freed to Nathan Calderone to sustain the game's first scoring drive. Three plays after the completion Lucas Forbes, the games top rusher (19-112), buried into the end zone for a one-yard score. The Eagles had a bonafide threat to punch in a second score when Spencer Walsh picked off the first of his two pass thefts, but the Colts defense forced a fumble at their own 35. However with 3:48 to go in the opening half, Blue Mountain got a big break when Marian was attempting to punt but the slick ball was fumbled at the 28. In five plays the Eagles cashed home their scored score on an Erech (stet) Noecker 1-yard plunge. And the implosion for Marian continued on the ensuing series. A third fumble landed in the hands of Blue Mountain's Brayden Lewis at the Marian 16. Another short field and another touchdown came when Forbes knocked home a two-yard run and Christian Puzzi's first PAT kick made it 19-0.Indeed Marian was a different story in the second. Its defense thwarted a would-be score and the Eagles tried settling for a 41-yard field goal try - wide right. When Blue Mountain was working on another potential scoring drive to open the fourth, Aaron DeAngelo picked off a pass deep in Marian's end of the field. And the defense rose late in the game stuffing a fourth-down-and-1 attempt at the Blue Mountain 33.That stance nearly rejuvenated the Colts comeback bid. They had scored their only touchdown with 8:25 to play. Ethan Kuczynski found DeAngelo for a 12-yard score and Tim Busher hit the PAT kick.MISCUES HURT… Marian's turnovers were a killer in the first half. It was without a doubt a tale of two halves. The Colts were much, much better in the second half on both sides of the ball.COLTS HAVE RUSHING WOES… Marian's run game was stifled most of the night and with the loss of Snerr on a non-contact that put a crimp into the offensive plans.TWO HAVLES DON'T MAKE A RIGHT… Marian managed just 1 first down in the first half, but ripped off 7 in the second half. Blue Mountain had 6 first downs in the first half, 4 in the second half.QUOTABLES… "Their good kids, they're a little frustrated right now, but we just got to get back on track right now and that's my responsibility." - Stan Dakosty.
