Improved Wreckers fall

The first time Weatherly and Tri-Valley met on the girls' soccer field this season, the Bulldogs breezed to an 11-0 victory.

If Tuesday's outcome at the Weatherly High School field is any indication as to which direction the Wreckers are moving, head coach Jenie Farrow and her squad have all positives to report. This time around, TriValley still prevailed, but by a 1-0 score in a tightly contested battle that could have gone either way."At halftime of our first game with them, I made some switches," Farrow said. "All of my offensive girls, my minds and my forwards, I put them back on defense. They're doing really well in the back and that's made all the difference."Naturally, there are some changes that need getting used to. But Farrow's group of athletes seem to be adapting well with the new lineup. In fact, if not for Tri-Valley's Wendy Header scoring unassisted in the late stages of the first half, the result could have been different.Header's goal proved to be all the scoring they would need to pull out the win. There were plenty of other scoring chances for the winners, but the Wreckers' defense had strong play after strong play to stifle those potential threats."The one thing that we need to work on is getting those girls that were back on defense previously to become more offensive-minded players so we can build through the back," Farrow said. "I give those girls that moved from defense up to offense all the credit in the world because it's a hard transition. But it was a change that needed to be made."The winless Wreckers remain focused on the goal of nabbing that elusive first victory during the remaining games on the schedule.Tri-Valley head coach, Ryan Wagner, was quick to note the improvement in the Wreckers, but immediately returned focus to his own team and the improvements he hopes to see in the upcoming days."We were looking to maintain possession more throughout tonight's game and we didn't do that too well," Wagner said. "Often times, that last touch was just too big, but the girls were tired, after a game yesterday and the long trip. But we're still glad to get the win.""TRIFECTA" ... Following the game, Ciana Gomez, one of the three seniors that had her position changed to defense, gave credit to the Wreckers' defensive improvements. She said that the three seniors' experience of playing together for years has helped in their abilities and confidence."We call ourselves 'the Trifecta," she said.CONSISTENTLY INCONSISTENT ... Coach Farrow mentioned the problem of consistency as one of her team's main issues to work on. Weatherly had games on Monday and Tuesday and the difference between their level of play in those two games was drastically different. Farrow hopes that her squad's intensity level matches that of their hustle against Tri-Valley.
