Marian to host Indians
Week six of the high school football landscape in the Times News area looks to be filled with numerous potential postseason teams.
A pair of potential playoff teams is Lehighton and Marian and it just so happens that the Colts and Indians will face off this week at Men of Marian Stadium. The match-up between the two has proven to create an exciting rivalry throughout recent years. The added story lines of Lehighton's charge for an Anthracite League title and Marian's determination to stay alive in the District 11 A playoff picture possesses more than enough drama to stand alone as the week six Times News Game of the Week.As noted, these two teams are certainly at different spots on the confidence scale. The Indians have to be riding high after a 7-6 victory over AAAA Governor Mifflin on the road just a week ago. There's no doubt that head coach Tom McCarroll and the Tribe will be looking to continue that momentum as they head on the road for the second consecutive week."In our time here I would say this is definitely one of our biggest victories," said McCarroll. "Governor Mifflin is a very solid AAAA program from a competitive league and to be able to come away with a victory, especially on the road, is and was huge for our program."The Colts, on the other hand, are coming off back-to-back losses to North Schuylkill and Blue Mountain. The Anthracite Football League title is out of reach for the blue and gold, but a postseason berth is still very attainable.Presently, the District 11 playoff picture looks like this for both teams: The Indians (5-0) are ranked second in the District 11 AAA power ratings, safely in the top four. The Colts (3-2) are hanging onto to the fourth spot in the A ratings. It's pretty safe to say that either a win or a loss for both of these teams will change the outlook on their postseason chances."This is obviously an important game for us against a very talented football team," said Marian head coach Stan Dakosty. "We didn't take care of the football last week against Blue Mountain, so we have to make sure we correct that. We must also play solid upfront on both sides of the ball."The matchup within the matchup will be between the Lehighton offensive line and the Marian defensive front. Both units have been bright spots this season. The Tribe offensive line had to replace three to four starters up front from a year ago, but you couldn't tell that by looking at their success. Lehighton is averaging 31 points per game and over 370 yards of total offense."Both our offensive and defensive lines have been great this season. It seems every week that a new guy is stepping up and making a play for us up front," said McCarroll. "It's a testament to how hard those guys have worked and how focused they are week in and week out."Unfortunately, Marian will be without starting tailback K.J. Snerr this week due to an injury to his knee he sustained last week. The senior running back is a huge part of the Colts offense, having rushed for 460 yards and six touchdowns on the season."We will be without K.J. this week and also without our back-up tailback as well. But we have guys that are ready to go and step in to contribute," said Dakosty. "The key for us is to play a complete football game and play well in all facets of the game. We can't make the kind of mistakes we've been making and defeat a high-caliber team like Lehighton."A lot is on the line for both teams on Friday. Can the Colts contain the Indians one-two punch of quarterback Tyler Cann (737 yards passing, 6TDs) and running back Wyatt Clements (695 yards rushing, 10TDs).Will Lehighton be able to carry its momentum from last week's big win over Governor Mifflin into this week's road game? These are questions that are sure to be answered on Friday night.
