Spartan speed too much for Bombers

CENTER VALLEY - In the 10 years that Southern Lehigh head football coach John Toman has been at the helm for the Spartans, he has had plenty of reputable teams. However, the 2015 Southern Lehigh squad is, according to the veteran coach, the fastest team out of them all.

The overall team speed hurt the Blue Bombers in nearly every facet of the game, as the Spartans executed their game plan to near perfection, en route to a 55-12 rout over the locals."We've got a quarterback that put the ball on the money, we have some receivers that can catch the ball, and like I've said, 'This is the fastest team I've had since I've been here," Toman said after the contest. "From our defensive line to our skill kids, we have speed."Senior quarterback Blake Levengood led the winners with three passing scores and a rushing TD on 7-of-17 passing, while also leading his team in rushing with 73 yards on seven carries.Meanwhile, junior halfback/receiver Tim Walter hauled in four receptions for 124 yards, including two for scores, just to mention a few of the key contributors to the Spartans' success. In fact, five out of their eight first-half possessions resulted in scores, as they built a 41-12 lead at halftime, on their way to a 5-1 record with the win."I think tonight, we put a whole game together and you can see the result," Toman continued. "There have been games where we've had hiccups here and there, and they cost us, but tonight, we executed well."In the early-going, it looked like Palmerton would challenge the winners, as they forced a three-and-out on the Spartans' first possession and were moving the ball well on their initial drive of the night. However, a fumble landed perfectly in the hands of senior linebacker Michael Riccio, who toted the ball 56 yards for the first TD of the evening."We knew we were going to have to play a good game, even a flawless game," Palmerton head coach Chris Walkowiak said. "We started out great, I thought, and it just came down to execution.""I know Coach Walkowiak does a really good job with them," Toman said. "He's got some really talented kids and they're a good football team. We prepared as though it was going to be a battle, but our kids just came out and executed tonight."GUT CHECK TIME...After starting out the season with three straight wins, Palmerton has now dropped their past three to remain steady at 3-3, heading into week six. Head Coach Chris Walkowiak knows how important it is to remain focused solely on their upcoming tilt with Catasauqua in week seven, in hopes of returning to their winning ways.TRIPLE THREAT...Between Levengood, Tim Walter and junior Zach Mohr, the three Spartans accounted for 72 percent of their team's total offense on the night. All three of the integral participants managed to come up big for the winners, as Mohr's two rushing TDs, Levengood's four scores (three passing, one rushing), and Walter's two big catches for points produced a majority of the winners' outcome.RAI OF SUNSHINE...On a night where storms threatened the skies continuously, and lightning pushed the game's start back to 7:15, Palmerton senior Rai Washington was the locals' biggest bright spot in the loss. The fullback managed 75 yards on 13 carries, along with a rumble to the pay dirt to get the Blue Bombers on the scoreboard.
